Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa has unveiled a detailed 10-year master plan aimed at the preservation of wildlife, restoration of ecosystems, and enhancement of green cover in the capital. During a conversation with ANI, Minister Sirsa stressed the importance of protecting wildlife, particularly in light of recent breeding seasons and the influx of various animal species.

The master plan is designed to create a safe haven for wildlife, incorporating strategies to address key concerns such as water scarcity and food availability. Notably, new water bodies are being constructed in efforts to ensure that animals have access to essential resources. Furthermore, the government is taking steps to provide food for local monkeys on a daily basis across numerous areas, thus facilitating the growth of natural habitats within urban settings. This comprehensive approach aims to promote biodiversity within the capital.

In-Depth Studies and Urban Challenges

The Delhi administration intends to carry out extensive studies targeting broader environmental issues alongside enhancing the city’s green cover. This proactive approach is a necessary response to the ongoing environmental challenges that New Delhi faces, which include urban heat and pollution. By addressing these complex issues, the administration hopes to mitigate adverse effects on both wildlife and human inhabitants.

Minister Sirsa’s announcement comes at a time when the city is under scrutiny from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) concerning its environmental management strategies. The NGT has been actively involved in reviewing matters connected to urban flooding in New Delhi, prompting the need for immediate action. The tribunal has called for a collaborative meeting between two key agencies, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and the Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) Department, in order to resolve ongoing disputes related to floodplain management.

This joint meeting, directed by a NGT bench led by Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Expert Member Dr. Afroz Ahmad, is expected to address concerns surrounding the physical demarcation of the Yamuna floodplain. Currently, this exercise is at a standstill following the release of a revised map from the I&FC Department. Adhering to strict guidelines outlined in the River Ganga Authorities Order, 2016, the NGT has ordered the I&FC Department to prepare an explanation within one week in preparation for a hearing set for September 18, 2026.
