Yamuna Ferry Service Set to Launch Before Chhath Puja

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Yamuna ferry service is scheduled to be inaugurated prior to Chhath Puja, as announced by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday. The festival will be observed nationwide from November 13 to November 16. Originally, the ferry service was intended to commence on February 20 to mark the first anniversary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government. However, the launch was postponed due to incomplete preparations related to the ferry service.

During her inspection at the Sonia Vihar Sports Club, Gupta assessed the ferry service and subsequently visited Sur Ghat, a site designated for Chhath celebrations. She expressed optimism regarding the upcoming service, which aims to enhance the experience of devotees and visitors alike.

Details of the Ferry Service

According to Gupta, the ferry service will be operational a few days prior to Chhath Puja. The area surrounding the service is being developed into a picnic destination, allowing families to visit and pay respects to the River Yamuna. Gupta highlighted that similar ferry services exist in other cities, where residents can enjoy river safaris on the Ganga and Yamuna, promoting a sense of tranquillity.

The ferry, named “Namo Yamuna,” is currently docked at the Sonia Vihar Sports Club. Government officials have indicated that the one-hour cruise will traverse a 5-kilometre route between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur. Passengers will be treated to scenic views of the ghats and the natural beauty along the riverbanks.

Ticket prices for the ferry are expected to be approximately ₹500 per person. The jetties will be equipped with designated boarding areas, ticket counters, and waiting facilities to ensure a smooth experience for passengers. The ferry has been constructed by Mumbai-based Inspiration Marine Pvt Ltd.

Specifications of the Vessel

The vessel, known as Island Boats 40 (IB 40), is a 40-foot river cruise boat designed with a catamaran-style hull, which enhances its stability on the water. The boat features a beam of 11 feet and a draft of 3 feet, enabling it to navigate shallow sections of the river effectively.

Officials have emphasised that the ferry service is part of a broader initiative to improve riverfront accessibility and recreational options along the Yamuna. The project aims to attract both locals and tourists, providing them with a unique way to experience the river’s beauty and cultural significance.

As the launch date approaches, preparations are being finalised to ensure a successful debut of the ferry service. The initiative is expected to contribute to the development of the Yamuna riverfront and enhance the overall experience for those participating in Chhath Puja celebrations.
