Delhi is bracing for thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds an orange alert issued

The CSR Journal Magazine

Delhi is expected to experience thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds shortly. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for South, Central, and New Delhi, indicating that significant weather disruptions are imminent. A yellow alert extends to southwest, west, and northeast Delhi, advising residents to remain cautious of changing conditions.

Following a notably wet Friday night, forecasts suggest that the weather may deteriorate further throughout Saturday evening. The IMD advises that residents prepare for possible storms, accompanied by lightning and potentially damaging winds.

A 30 to 40 per cent chance of severe storms is particularly noted for eastern Delhi, Noida, and Faridabad as intense weather systems move into the area. The nature of these alerts serves to inform the public and ensure safety during severe weather events.

Understanding the Cause of Current Weather Patterns

The recent precipitation in Delhi can be attributed to two successive western disturbances impacting northwest India. These disturbances are expected to bring peak activity between April 3 and 4, with additional disturbances forecasted for April 7.

Western disturbances are complex systems originating from the Mediterranean region. They travel eastward, dragging moisture along their path. When these systems interact with the warm air prevalent over northern India, especially during early April, they can lead to severe weather phenomena such as thunderstorms and hail.

This current weather system appears relatively narrow, resulting in varying impacts across different areas of Delhi. Major portions of west and north Delhi may remain unaffected, while eastern sections of Delhi-NCR, alongside Noida and Faridabad, are poised for potentially severe weather later in the day. The IMD forecasts a high risk of thunderstorms between 8 PM and 9 PM this evening in these areas.

Wider Implications for North India

The weather events in Delhi are reflective of broader conditions impacting northern India. Isolated hailstorms are anticipated across various regions, and thunderstorms, along with lightning, are expected to continue across central India until April 6.

The IMD has underscored the urgency of the situation by issuing an orange alert for Delhi, especially as a storm system advances from West Uttar Pradesh. States including Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Haryana are similarly affected, experiencing potential severe weather events.

In addition, the weather system forecasts strong southwest winds reaching speeds of 20 to 30 km/h, which may further exacerbate the conditions throughout the evening. Meteorologists remain vigilant and are advising residents to stay updated regarding evolving weather alerts.

Future Weather Projections for Delhi

Forecasts indicate that the current respite from severe weather will be brief. A new western disturbance is expected to influence Delhi again from Tuesday, April 7, bringing additional storms and temperature fluctuations between 18 and 29 degrees Celsius.

While April’s volatility in weather is not unprecedented, it appears to be intensifying this year. Meteorologists note that the patterns of 2026 are reminiscent of those observed in 2024, marked by frequent late-season disturbances.

As the current weather fronts move through, temperatures are anticipated to rise significantly, remaining high into May. This ongoing interaction between winter weather systems and the onset of summer conditions is producing pronounced short bursts of severe weather before the traditional heat settles in.
