The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA), under the leadership of Tukaram Mundhe, has taken significant action against five food establishments in Mumbai. This crackdown comes just before the festive season, with all five licences suspended immediately due to serious violations related to food quality and hygiene.

Specific infractions include the production of adulterated ghee, operation without valid licences, and lack of cleanliness and sanitary measures. The inspections that prompted these actions were carried out within a 24-hour period, highlighting an urgent need for adherence to food safety regulations in the city.

Authorities indicated that immediate measures were necessary to protect public health in light of the forthcoming festive celebrations. The violations alleged against these establishments varied from counterfeit dairy products to unsanitary conditions. Such actions underscore the proactive stance of the FDA in ensuring compliance with food safety protocols.

Details of Specific Violations

One notable case involved Gurukripa Dairy Products located in Malad East. On September 21, an inspection revealed that the establishment was reportedly manufacturing fake ghee by blending refined sunflower oil, vanaspati, and other branded ghee. The fraudulent product, marketed as ‘Pooja Ghee’, led to the seizure of approximately 2,464.05 kg of adulterated products valued at around Rs 15.15 lakh.

Additionally, the premises were noted to be infested with rodents and insects. On September 22, Gufran Seek Corner in Versova was found to be operating without a valid food licence. The FDA discovered numerous deficiencies, including inadequate testing of drinking water and poor food storage practices. The establishment was ordered to cease operations immediately until compliance with licensing and safety standards was achieved.

A further infringement was noted at BJRS (Gallops) Restaurant in Mahalaxmi, where inspectors found blood and ketchup stains from non-vegetarian items stored improperly. The kitchen was described as greasy, and the drainage system was lacking appropriate cover. Records related to health checks for food handlers were also reportedly absent.

Continued Enforcement and Public Engagement

Dreamer Hospitality Pvt. Ltd. in Bandra West faced scrutiny during an FDA inspection that revealed multiple breaches of food hygiene laws. As a result, the administration is pursuing legal measures against the establishment according to applicable regulations. This proactive approach illustrates the FDA’s commitment to tackling food safety violations effectively.

Another establishment, Mirari in Bandra West, was also found to be in violation of food safety standards as outlined in ‘Schedule 4’. The FDA has initiated legal proceedings against this venue, further reflecting the department’s resolve in maintaining public health and safety.
