Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) has rolled out an Automated Vehicle Verification System at ten of its compressed natural gas (CNG) stations in Delhi. This move aims to bolster safety checks for vehicles utilising CNG. The cutting-edge technology identifies vehicles and ensures the validity of their CNG cylinder hydro-test certification. Any vehicle without a valid certificate will be denied CNG refuelling.

This initiative forms part of IGL’s ongoing commitment to enhancing safety measures across its CNG stations. Previously, station personnel manually checked the validity of cylinder tests before allowing vehicles to refuel. With the introduction of this automated system, these checks are expected to be more efficient and reliable.

Regular inspections by IGL officers will continue to ensure compliance with these safety standards across all participating stations. This dual approach of manual checks supplemented by technological advancements is designed to foster a more secure refuelling environment.

Tech Components of the New System

The new system comprises several technological advancements to ensure compliance with safety norms. Cameras installed at the participating stations capture each vehicle’s registration number. These details are then processed through an artificial intelligence-based application, which links the vehicle to its respective CNG cylinder information.

By connecting to the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) online portal, the system verifies the status of the cylinder’s certification in real time. When a vehicle is flagged as non-compliant, alerts can be generated throughout the station via handheld devices, LED displays, and the public announcement system.

This capability allows station personnel to intervene swiftly and prevent the dispensing of CNG to vehicles lacking the necessary certification. IGL has indicated that this automated approach will lessen reliance on manual verification, thereby creating a more centralised and traceable system for monitoring compliance regarding cylinder certifications. This is significant for improving overall safety in CNG refuelling operations.

Regulatory Framework and Expansion Plans

The automated verification system aligns with the safety requirements stipulated under the Gas Cylinders (Amended) Rules, 2025. Specifically, Rule 35(1) mandates that CNG cylinders must undergo hydro-testing at a PESO-approved testing centre every three years. As such, IGL has reaffirmed its commitment to refusing CNG dispensing to vehicles that do not possess a valid hydro-test certificate.

Looking ahead, IGL intends to expand this automated verification system to all its CNG stations in the near future. This broader rollout is anticipated to streamline the certificate verification process, making it more systematic and driven by technology. As a result, it is expected to significantly enhance the traceability of safety compliance during CNG refuelling.

The integration of relevant CNG cylinder certification information with vehicle databases is also on IGL’s future agenda, subject to applicable regulations. This progressive step is part of a broader strategy to ensure the safety and compliance of CNG refuelling operations across the organisation’s network.
