Run, Eat, Repeat: Inside India’s Growing Post-Run Social Dining Trend

The CSR Journal Magazine

Across India, a growing number of individuals are waking up early to engage in running activities, which are now closely linked with culinary experiences. The run clubs are evolving, turning weekly jogging sessions into opportunities for social interaction, featuring food options such as kachoris, tiramisu, and even ice cream. This shift suggests that these communities are analysing the dual purpose of exercise and enjoyment, as members savour delicious treats after their runs.

The format of these food runs varies, with some offering refreshments at the finish line and others incorporating moving food carts or cafe pit stops along the way. For example, the Bikaner Run Club gained significant attention with its kachori run, where participants enjoyed fried kachoris immediately after completing the run, dubbing it a ‘Sunday cheat day’.

Stride Run Club in Bengaluru has created a unique experience where runners travel from one bakery to another, sampling small portions of signature items while collecting stamps as tickets for entry to the subsequent stops. The event typically spans 5 to 7 km, concluding with a celebratory dance party, making it not just a run but a festive occasion.

Culinary Inspiration Behind the Events

Sidharth Yadav, the founder of Stride Run Club, attributes the idea to his passion for exploring different cafes in Bengaluru. He intended to fuse his love for food with running, prompting participants to discover new establishments while connecting with others. In contrast, the Hyderabad Stride Club incorporates a mobile tiramisu cart, encouraging participants to pursue the treat, thereby making running more accessible and enjoyable.

Similarly, the Hundredmile Society in Mumbai introduced modak-themed runs, drawing inspiration from the Bikaner Run Club while ensuring that the food was light enough to consume during the activity. Karun Aranakkal, founder of Hundredmile Society, emphasised choosing snacks that resonate with local culture yet remain manageable for participants.

The distinctive nature of these runs contributes to their growing popularity, with participants expressing a desire for community interaction beyond just physical exercise. Individuals often find companionship and camaraderie while conveniently making new friends, all while enjoying the adventure of running and tasting local delicacies.

Social Media Influence on Participation

The rapid rise of food-themed runs can be partially attributed to social media, which transforms the perception of running from a mundane activity into a vibrant social experience. Aranakkal notes that blending running with food creates visually compelling narratives that attract attention on platforms like Instagram.

Participants express diverse motivations for joining these events, ranging from seeking social interactions to promoting their businesses within the community. Additionally, social media serves as an efficient marketing tool for these clubs, increasing awareness and participation.

While the idea of indulging in calorie-rich foods post-run raises concerns about health, experts suggest that consuming smaller portions of food during low-intensity activities typically poses minimal risk. Dr Harsh Kapoor, chairman of Metro Centre for Liver & Digestive Diseases, confirms that although heavier foods can cause discomfort, the casual nature of these runs allows for safe consumption of light snacks.

Ultimately, these food-centric runs are not aimed at serious athletes but appeal to those seeking a less intimidating entry point into fitness. By integrating food and community, these events help soften the mental barriers some individuals face towards exercising. They serve as an avenue to engage newcomers in physical activities while fostering social connections through shared culinary experiences, making running an inviting aspect of community life.
