Despite facing an initial setback, losing the first game 11-21, Lakshya demonstrated remarkable resilience. He came back to win the subsequent games decisively, with scores of 21-5 and 21-19. The match lasted for one hour and six minutes, providing a morale boost for the entire Indian team. Following Lakshya’s victory, the doubles team of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, along with second men’s singles player Ayush Shetty, secured wins in straight games to complete the clean sweep against Japan.

Competitive Atmosphere at Ichinomiya

The atmosphere at the Ichinomiya City Municipal Gymnasium was electric, particularly after Japan’s earlier victory over India in the women’s team event, where they triumphed 3-1 against the panel featuring PV Sindhu. The Japanese team had proved to be formidable opponents, eliminating all Indian singles players and successfully advancing in the competition. PV Sindhu’s loss against Akane Yamaguchi proved to be critical in this context, underscoring the intensity of the day’s matches.

As Lakshya approached his match with Naraoka, he understood the stakes involved and the necessity to secure a win quickly, which would alleviate pressure on the remaining players. His performance exhibited initial difficulties, particularly due to the drift on the far side of the court. The coaching staff promptly addressed these issues, advising Lakshya to adjust his play style to avoid short and flat rallies. This counsel proved beneficial as he gained confidence, altering his approach to engage in longer rallies and capitalise on potential errors from Naraoka.

In the second game, Lakshya’s strategic overhaul proved effective, as he secured a commanding 21-5 victory. With the momentum shifting, the contest turned increasingly competitive during the deciding game. After trailing at the break, Lakshya remained optimistic about overcoming the deficit once he transitioned to the more advantageous side of the court. Despite facing an uphill battle at 14-19, he demonstrated unwavering determination, eventually clinching the game 21-19, thus securing the first point for India in the quarter-final.

India’s Path to the Medals

Following Lakshya’s critical win, the doubles team of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty further cemented India’s lead by overcoming their opponents, former world champions Hoki Takuro and Kobayashi Yugo, with scores of 21-18 and 24-22. This victory placed India ahead 2-0, setting the stage for Ayush Shetty’s decisive match against World No. 16 Koki Watanabe. Ayush delivered a commendable performance and won his match convincingly, concluding the quarter-final with scores of 21-10 and 21-19, thereby guaranteeing a medal for India in this event.

India is now set to face the winner of the other quarter-final match between defending champions China and Korea in the semi-finals. The upcoming match is highly anticipated and could further elevate India’s standing in this prestigious international competition.
