Real Madrid has requested the dismissal of Javier Tebas as the president of LaLiga following recent comments regarding the club’s grievances over officiating during a match against Atletico Madrid. Tebas responded to Real Madrid’s criticisms, characterised as unfounded, by asserting that the club is leveraging refereeing controversies to shift attention from their own performances.

The LaLiga president referred to Real Madrid TV as “the regime’s television” and remarked, “When it isn’t Negreira, it’s the referee. Enough of this fog! The usual pretext is no longer believed by anyone with a measure of logic.” His statements have intensified the ongoing tensions between the league and the iconic football club.

Reactions From Real Madrid

In a strongly worded statement released on Tuesday, Real Madrid condemned Tebas for allegedly using his position to undermine the club. The organisation deemed it intolerable that the LaLiga president would leverage his role to repeatedly target Real Madrid publicly. They expressed serious concern regarding his perceived preoccupation with the club’s affairs, which they argue detracts from his responsibilities towards all LaLiga teams.

Real Madrid also disapproved of Tebas’s commentary on a piece written by an independent journalist, asserting that his remarks were provocative and diverted into a personal attack on the club. The club described his recent behaviour as “particularly serious and astonishing,” and labelled it incongruent with the standards expected of an official in his position. They described his actions as “an utterly irresponsible act.”

Moreover, the club alleged that Tebas was misusing his personal social media accounts to harm their reputation rather than reinforcing confidence in the league’s institutions. They referred to his consistent attempts to tarnish Real Madrid’s public image as astonishing, emphasising that a LaLiga president should focus on fostering trust in the competition’s fairness and integrity.

Real Madrid’s Concerns Over Officiating

This public dispute follows Real Madrid’s recent 2-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid, which has raised further concerns regarding officiating standards. Following the match, Real’s official website described the refereeing as “terrible” and highlighted concerns over specific incidents, including a failure to dismiss Atletico defender Cristian Romero for a contentious challenge on Jude Bellingham. The club also disputed another incident involving a foul on Federico Valverde.

Real Madrid’s manager, Jose Mourinho, publicly criticised the officiating handled by referee Miguel Angel Ortiz Arias, suggesting the team could perform better if treated fairly. He remarked that Real Madrid could vie for the title if they were allowed to compete on equal terms. In contrast, Tebas has rejected claims of a systematic conspiracy against Real Madrid, stating that attributing blame to referees is an overly simplistic approach to the complex realities on the pitch.

Currently, Real Madrid occupies the fourth position in the LaLiga standings, trailing leaders Barcelona by six points after seven matches. Javier Tebas has held the position of LaLiga president since 2013, and he was re-elected for a fourth term unopposed in December 2023, with his current mandate set to last until 2027. The relationship between Real Madrid and the LaLiga president has been fraught for several years, with both parties recently feuding in court over league rulings and decisions.
