On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump returned to the United Nations General Assembly, where he remarked on the ongoing conflict with Iran, asserting his decision to engage militarily. He urged Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and re-enter negotiations, suggesting that his resolve during a tumultuous period could potentially reshape the nature of the country.

Trump articulated the weight of his impending choices regarding Iran, claiming, “I have a big decision to make.” He presented two stark options: fostering a deal that would allow Iran to flourish or decisively annihilating the nation to prevent further violence. The war with Iran remained the focal point of his speech, overshadowing other topics he touched upon.

Economic pressures on Iran have intensified due to US sanctions, which have substantially diminished their oil revenues. The conflict has had widespread effects on global oil markets, maintaining high prices and creating significant volatility.

For instance, recent actions by Saudi Arabia to halt a pipeline have underscored the ongoing threats posed by Iranian-backed militants. Furthermore, continued Houthi advancements in Yemen are contributing to safety concerns for oil transport in the Red Sea. Trump suggested that upon resolution of the conflict, oil prices might drastically decrease.

He claimed that, “Oil prices will come plummeting down even lower than they were at the start of the conflict.” This highlights his administration’s focus on economic implications stemming from military engagements. Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that Trump has expressed a willingness to meet with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during his visit to New York, emphasising the importance of dialogue in resolving international conflicts.

Rubio articulated that engagement does not imply agreement but is essential for addressing complex issues.
