Cyclone Murasu’s Impact Eases in Andhra Pradesh as Rainfall Decreases

The CSR Journal Magazine

The effects of Cyclone Murasu have significantly diminished across Andhra Pradesh, as reported by the state emergency operations centre. Rainfall activity has notably decreased, with no warnings for heavy rainfall currently in effect. By Thursday morning, rainfall had largely ceased, and only light showers were observed in select areas along the southern coastal belt.

The centre noted that the heavy rainfall experienced the previous day was primarily concentrated in the Godavari region, which includes West and East Godavari, Kakinada, Eluru, and Polavaram districts. Some rain-gauge stations in these areas recorded substantial precipitation levels. On Thursday morning, rainfall activity had shifted towards Nellore district, but it remained light to moderate.

Most districts, particularly those in Rayalaseema, reported little to no rainfall. Urban areas also experienced a decline in rainfall intensity, with no towns reporting heavy rain or new instances of waterlogging as of Thursday morning. The highest cumulative rainfall over the past two days was noted in Nidadavole, Kovvur, and Kakinada, followed by Mummidivaram and Amalapuram in Konaseema.

Water Levels Stabilise in Reservoirs

Water levels in various reservoirs and drainage systems have stabilised, with inflows into all monitored projects either steady or declining. The Prakasam Barrage is currently discharging water at a rate that matches its inflow, while the water levels in Thammileru and Budameru, which had increased on Wednesday night, are now receding. The Yerra Kalva has also stabilised after a sharp rise, and the Kondaveeti Vagu pump house is operational to maintain controlled water levels.

The forecast for the upcoming days indicates isolated light to moderate rainfall across the state. Slightly increased rainfall activity is anticipated in the southern coastal districts, including Nellore, Tirupati, and Bapatla, as the weekend approaches. However, this rainfall is expected to remain moderate in intensity.

Despite the cyclone’s impact having largely abated, residents in low-lying areas and those living near drains, canals, and reservoirs have been urged to exercise caution. The district administration has issued advisories, and individuals are advised against crossing overflowing streams and causeways.

Ongoing Precautions for Residents

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have emphasised the importance of adhering to safety measures. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and to follow any further instructions provided by local officials. The community is reminded to remain vigilant, especially in areas prone to flooding.

As the weather conditions improve, the focus will shift towards recovery and ensuring that any residual effects of the cyclone are effectively managed. Local administrations are prepared to respond to any emerging needs as the situation evolves.

In summary, while the immediate threat posed by Cyclone Murasu has subsided, ongoing vigilance and preparedness remain crucial for the safety of residents in affected areas. The state government is committed to providing support and resources to ensure the well-being of its citizens during this transition period.
