Cyclone Arnab Batters Andhra Pradesh And Odisha, Uproots Trees And Floods Roads

The CSR Journal Magazine

Cyclone Arnab battered coastal Andhra Pradesh and Odisha on Wednesday, bringing torrential rain, powerful winds and flooding that disrupted daily life across several areas. Videos from affected locations showed uprooted trees, waterlogged roads and seawater entering homes and streets as the storm struck India’s eastern coastline.

Wind gusts reaching 150 kmph and intense rainfall caused widespread disruption, while residents in low-lying areas faced inundation. In Kakinada, police rescued four people who had become trapped by floodwaters near the Bombay Katta area, as emergency teams responded to reports of people stranded by the rising water.

Flooding And Fallen Trees Disrupt Coastal Areas

Andhra Pradesh bore the brunt of the cyclone, with heavy rain and destructive winds affecting coastal districts. Roads were blocked by fallen trees, electricity lines were damaged and several localities experienced power cuts. Flooding was reported in low-lying neighbourhoods, while rough seas pushed seawater into coastal settlements.

Visuals from affected areas captured the scale of the disruption, with inundated streets and debris obstructing movement. The storm also affected parts of Odisha, where strong winds, heavy rain and rough coastal conditions prompted authorities to maintain heightened vigilance.

The India Meteorological Department said the landfall process was continuing along the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts on Wednesday morning. The cyclone’s centre remained close to the coastline, with the storm bringing sustained winds of 125-135 kmph and gusts of up to 150 kmph.

Police Rescue People Trapped By Floodwaters

In Kakinada, police rescued four people stranded near Bombay Katta after floodwaters surrounded the place where they were staying. The group had left for work in the morning but was unable to leave as water accumulated around the premises.

Police teams reached the area after receiving information about their situation and brought all four people to safety. Authorities urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from flooded areas, particularly where strong currents or damaged electrical infrastructure could pose additional risks.

Authorities Monitor Storm And Flood Threat

The cyclone’s impact extended across several coastal districts, with officials monitoring rainfall, wind speeds and the risk of seawater inundation. The weather department warned that intense rain and damaging winds could continue during the landfall phase, while low-lying coastal areas remained vulnerable to flooding.

Authorities have been coordinating precautionary measures and emergency responses in affected regions. Residents have been advised to follow official instructions, avoid venturing outdoors unless necessary and seek assistance if trapped by floodwaters.

The full extent of the damage across Andhra Pradesh and Odisha was still being assessed as the storm continued to affect the region on Wednesday.
