The CSR Journal Magazine

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge announced the party’s five commitments for Assam on Sunday, emphasizing women’s welfare, comprehensive healthcare, land rights, and the pursuit of justice in the Zubeen Garg death case. Speaking at a rally in Naoboicha, located in the Lakhimpur district, Kharge criticized the ruling BJP government, accusing it of persistent corruption while prioritizing the financial interests of its leaders and their families.

Monthly Cash Transfers and Business Support for Women

Among the five guarantees, the Congress party proposed a monthly cash transfer specifically for women. In addition to this, an additional financial support of Rs 50,000 will be provided to women who wish to establish or expand their businesses. Kharge stated, “Our transfer will be unconditional and will not necessitate membership in any political party, unlike the current government’s approach.”

Comprehensive Health Insurance and Land Rights Initiatives

The party further committed to providing Rs 25 lakh in cashless health insurance for all families in Assam. Additionally, it aims to issue permanent land pattas to 10 lakh indigenous individuals. To support senior citizens, Congress also promised a monthly stipend of Rs 1,250. Kharge stated that these measures are part of their broader effort to enhance social welfare in the state.

Justice for Zubeen Garg Within 100 Days

In a significant pledge, Kharge emphasized the party’s dedication to ensuring justice in the Zubeen Garg death case, promising that action will be taken within 100 days if Congress regains power. This announcement has been framed within a broader context of advocating for transparency and accountability in governance.

Allegations Against BJP Government

During his address, Kharge accused the BJP-led government of widespread corruption and claimed that even relatives of party leaders are involved in unethical practices. He claimed the BJP is employing its “double engine” strategy in Assam, aiming to benefit its leaders in Delhi. His remarks highlighted a growing narrative among opposition parties pitching for a change in governance.

Criticism of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma

The Congress leader did not hold back in his criticism of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, labeling him as a “nakli” or fake CM. Kharge claimed that Sarma, who took over as Chief Minister after the 2021 elections, removed the incumbent Sarbananda Sonowal to secure his position. He asserted that such actions reflect a lack of integrity within the state’s leadership.

Concerns Over Intimidation and Societal Division

Kharge also raised concerns regarding the state government’s conduct, suggesting it has been suppressing dissent and fostering a climate of fear among citizens. He alleged that the current administration is working to create divisions among the people of Assam, which he believes undermines the state’s social fabric.
