Congress MP Bimol Akoijam Seeks Anticipatory Bail in Sexual Harassment Case

The CSR Journal Magazine

Congress Member of Parliament Angomcha Bimol Akoijam has filed an application for anticipatory bail in connection with a sexual harassment case.As reported the application is scheduled to be heard on Tuesday by Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh. This legal move follows a series of allegations that have significantly impacted Akoijam’s career.

Background of the Allegations

In October, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) terminated Akoijam’s employment due to allegations of sexual harassment. However, on Monday, the Delhi High Court intervened and stayed the university’s decision to dismiss him. The controversy began when at least 11 women students reportedly filed complaints against him in May, alleging inappropriate behaviour.

The allegations included claims that Akoijam invited students to his residence under the guise of meetings or gatherings, where he allegedly attempted to sexually harass them. Additionally, some students accused him of making obscene remarks during classes, raising serious concerns about his conduct as an educator.

The Delhi Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Akoijam on October 12, shortly after his dismissal from JNU. The FIR was filed at the Vasant Kunj North police station based on a complaint and supporting documents provided by the university’s chief security officer. This action marked a significant escalation in the ongoing investigation into the allegations against him.

Investigation and Internal Committee Findings

The FIR indicates that JNU’s Internal Committee conducted a thorough investigation into the allegations made by multiple complainants. The committee reportedly assessed witness statements and other relevant materials before forwarding its findings to the police. The chief security officer’s complaint outlined the committee’s observations and assessments regarding the claims against Akoijam.

According to the FIR, the Internal Committee examined the allegations against Akoijam, who is associated with the Centre for Studies of Social Systems at JNU’s School of Social Sciences. The committee’s investigation involved gathering evidence from both the complainants and defence witnesses, which contributed to the police’s decision to register the FIR.

In light of these developments, the Delhi High Court has issued a notice to JNU regarding Akoijam’s petition that challenges his dismissal. While the court has stayed the termination, the case is set to be heard in January. This legal battle adds another layer of complexity to an already contentious situation.

Future Proceedings and Implications

The upcoming hearing for Akoijam’s anticipatory bail plea is expected to take place on Tuesday, which will be crucial in determining his immediate legal standing. The outcome of this hearing may influence the trajectory of the case and the ongoing investigation by the Delhi Police.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the implications of the case extend beyond Akoijam himself, potentially affecting the broader academic environment at JNU and the perception of how such allegations are handled within educational institutions.

With the Delhi High Court’s involvement and the ongoing police investigation, the situation remains fluid. The responses from both Akoijam and the university will likely shape public discourse surrounding issues of sexual harassment in academic settings.
