Manipur BJP Faces Internal Discontent Over Backlash Against MP Bimol Akoijam

The CSR Journal Magazine

Discontent is reportedly rising within the Manipur BJP regarding the party’s approach to the ongoing controversy involving Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam. Senior leaders have expressed concerns that the public attacks against Akoijam have backfired, leading to increased support for him, especially among the youth in the Meitei-dominated Imphal Valley. This shift in public sentiment has prompted some BJP officials to reconsider their strategies.

Despite the criticisms directed at Akoijam following his dismissal from Jawaharlal Nehru University over sexual harassment allegations, party MLA Tongbram Robindro Singh has publicly shown support for him. Singh praised Akoijam’s efforts to advocate for Manipur’s issues in Parliament, highlighting a divide within the party regarding their stance on the MP.

Key figures such as Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh and former Chief Minister N Biren Singh have been vocal critics of Akoijam. However, a senior BJP leader has indicated that the personal attacks on Akoijam were a miscalculation, stating that such actions have been counterproductive and have not resonated well with the electorate.

Rising Popularity of Bimol Akoijam

Senior BJP leaders have reportedly acknowledged the rapid rise in Akoijam’s popularity, particularly among younger demographics. Some insiders have described his appeal in the Imphal Valley as “unmatched,” suggesting that the party’s handling of the situation could have been more strategic. Feedback from BJP youth workers has indicated a need for a more thoughtful approach to counter Akoijam’s growing influence.

In response to the situation, a senior party member has suggested that the BJP should focus on contrasting the Congress leadership’s stance on the National Register of Citizens with Akoijam’s support for the initiative in Manipur. This strategy aims to highlight differences between the parties and potentially diminish Akoijam’s rising profile.

However, not all BJP leaders are convinced that Akoijam’s increasing public profile represents a long-term challenge. Some believe that internal factionalism within the Congress party, particularly the influence of veteran leaders like Okram Ibobi Singh, may limit Akoijam’s political ascent. Congress insiders also recognise that Akoijam might face challenges from within his own party.

Protests and Political Reactions

On October 10, the BJP’s women’s wing organised a protest march in Imphal, demanding Akoijam’s resignation from Parliament. Chief Minister Khemchand Singh and former Chief Minister Biren Singh have also called for his resignation, questioning the support he has received from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The BJP’s campaign against Akoijam has extended beyond Manipur, with protests occurring in various locations, including Delhi.

Public demonstrations in support of Akoijam have also taken place. On October 14, a significant number of youths marched towards the BJP’s state headquarters in Imphal, accusing the ruling party of politically targeting the MP. Some protesters attempted to enter the party office but were prevented by police. Additionally, a sit-in was held outside Akoijam’s residence, where participants claimed they had no political affiliations and viewed the actions against him as unjust.

In light of these events, the Manipur Congress has defended Akoijam, with state Congress president Ibobi Singh accusing the BJP of exploiting the allegations for political gain. He has questioned the timing of the allegations while asserting that the legal process should be allowed to unfold. Following the registration of an FIR against Akoijam on October 11, he has indicated intentions to challenge his dismissal through legal means.
