Congress Leader Manickam Tagore Moves Adjournment Motion Over Increased Commercial LPG Prices

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a significant political development, Congress leader Manickam Tagore has initiated an adjournment motion in the House concerning the recent surge in commercial LPG cylinder prices. This action has been propelled by concerns regarding the impact of the price hike on the general public and the broader economy. Tagore’s written communication stresses that the rates for commercial LPG cylinders have escalated by 30-40%, triggering widespread anxiety among citizens.

Public Outcry and Economic Concerns

In his letter, Tagore articulated that the drastic increase in LPG prices has intensified difficulties for the populace. He noted that the ongoing supply shortages coupled with rising costs of restaurant items have compounded the crisis, disproportionately affecting ordinary citizens. The Congress leader warned of significant economic repercussions, asserting that such substantial hikes in commercial LPG rates could result in soaring food prices, the deterioration of small and medium-sized businesses, and job losses for many individuals.

Call for Immediate Legislative Attention

Tagore criticized the government’s lack of action in addressing the issue, indicating that it has created a situation that requires urgent attention from national authorities. He called for the House to adjourn so that members could deliberate on the matter and explore ways to reverse the price hikes concerning commercial LPG. He emphasized the necessity for ensuring an adequate supply of LPG cylinders and controlling the accompanying increases in food prices.

Recent Adjustments in LPG Pricing

As of March 7, domestic LPG cylinder prices have also seen an increment, with the cost of a 14.2-kg household cooking gas cylinder rising by Rs 60 across India. The new price for a 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder has increased by Rs 115. These adjustments have garnered criticism from opposition leaders, suggesting that the financial burden on households will further escalate as a result of these changes.

Comparative Pricing with Neighboring Countries

Government officials have noted that, despite the price hikes, domestic LPG prices in India remain comparatively lower than those in several neighboring nations. According to recent assessments, after the price revision, a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder now costs approximately Rs 913 in Delhi. In contrast, similar cylinders are priced at around Rs 1,046 in Pakistan, Rs 1,241 in Sri Lanka, and Rs 1,207 in Nepal. This comparative perspective aims to provide context to the recent price adjustments.

Historical Price Trends

The price of domestic LPG cylinders had remained relatively stable since April 2025, when the non-subsidized rate in Delhi was recorded at Rs 853. The recent hike marks a significant shift in pricing trends, prompting renewed scrutiny from political and economic stakeholders alike. As the debate continues in the House, the impact of these changes on the economy and daily life remains an urgent topic for discussion among lawmakers.
