The CSR Journal Magazine

The three accused in the Coimbatore gang rape case were arrested on Tuesday morning. The trio sustained injuries after police opened fire when they tried to flee by attacking officers. They were arrested near a temple in the Vellakinaru area, close to Thudiyalur.

The accused — Karthi alias Kaleeswaran, Satish alias Karuppasamy, and Guna alias Thavasi — have been admitted to the Coimbatore District Government Hospital for treatment of gunshot injuries to their legs.

Do the Coimbatore Rape Case Accused Have Criminal Records?

The three accused hail from Sivagangai district and were working as construction labourers in Coimbatore. According to reports, Karuppasamy and Kaleeswaran are relatives, and all three have numerous criminal cases against them, including murder and assault.

What Is the Coimbatore Airport Rape Case?

On November 2, a 21-year-old postgraduate student from a private college was allegedly gang-raped, and her 25-year-old male friend was brutally attacked near the Coimbatore Airport.

The duo had gone out for a drive as it was a weekend and a holiday. They had parked their car in a deserted area behind the airport and were talking when the three accused, allegedly intoxicated, noticed the vehicle. The men approached the car and demanded that the duo step out. When they refused, one of the accused smashed the window with a sickle.

Seeing the situation escalate, the young man stepped out to reason with them. However, as soon as he did, one of the attackers slashed his skull with a sickle, causing him to faint on the spot. The trio then kidnapped the woman, sexually assaulted her, and fled the scene.

Around 2:00 a.m., after regaining consciousness, the injured man informed the police. He was rescued and taken to the hospital. After a brief search, the woman was found in a severely injured condition in nearby bushes and was immediately hospitalised.

Police Trace Accused Through CCTV Footage

Following the incident, a special police team was formed to trace the culprits. CCTV footage from the area helped identify the vehicle used by the accused, leading police to their hideout.

When officers surrounded them and attempted to make the arrest, the accused attacked police personnel with sickles. In retaliation, officers opened fire, injuring all three in the legs.

A detailed investigation has been launched, and the accused are currently under medical treatment. Once they recover, they will be interrogated further.
