Centre Extends 273 CAPF Companies Deployment in Delhi Until October 31

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Union home ministry has announced the extension of the deployment of 273 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in New Delhi until October 31. This decision comes amid concerns regarding the likelihood of “flash protests” by various political and other groups. Official sources disclosed this information on Friday, indicating that the extension is a precautionary measure to maintain public order.

These CAPF companies were initially deployed in the capital earlier this month in response to protests organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) directed the Delhi Police and the respective CAPF units on October 22 to ensure effective coordination of the deployment. This marks the second extension of the deployment, following a similar approval granted in mid-October.

Officials confirmed that the Delhi Police had communicated to the ministry the potential for flash protests in various sensitive areas of the city. The extension of the deployment is deemed necessary to ensure law and order is maintained amid these anticipated events.

Composition of Deployed Forces

Of the 273 companies remaining in Delhi, a significant portion comprises personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), which includes 125 companies. Among these, there are 20 units specifically designated for women personnel. Other forces involved in the deployment include 20 companies from the Rapid Action Force, 46 from the Border Security Force, 39 from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, 31 from the Sashastra Seema Bal, and 12 from the Central Industrial Security Force.

Each CAPF company typically has a sanctioned strength of 100 personnel; however, the effective operational strength is approximately 70 to 72 personnel. This deployment is crucial for ensuring that the local police can effectively manage any potential unrest that may arise in the coming weeks.

In recent weeks, parts of Delhi have already witnessed protests led by the CJP, particularly on October 9, where demonstrators called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. These protests were sparked by allegations of irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Following this, various opposition parties also staged protests echoing the same demands.

Recent Protests and Demonstrations

The CJP organised a notable demonstration titled ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ on October 16, further intensifying the political climate in the capital. The series of protests has raised concerns among law enforcement agencies regarding the potential for further unrest, prompting the extension of CAPF deployment.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and the presence of additional security forces is intended to deter any escalation of protests. The MHA’s decision reflects a proactive approach to maintaining stability in the national capital, especially given the sensitive nature of the political environment.

As the deadline of October 31 approaches, the Delhi Police, along with the deployed CAPF units, will remain vigilant in their efforts to manage public order and respond swiftly to any incidents that may arise. The situation will continue to be assessed, and further measures will be taken as necessary to ensure the safety and security of the city’s residents.
