Women in Jhansi Transform Their Lives Through Entrepreneurship

The CSR Journal Magazine

The journey of women in Bhojla village, located in the Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh, began when they decided to form self-help groups and establish a nutrition plant. Initially, not all family members supported their decision, and some women faced significant opposition at home. Financial difficulties further complicated their efforts to provide quality education for their children. However, these women have since experienced a remarkable transformation in their circumstances.

At the Saksham Prerna Small Industries unit, a group of 20 women is engaged in producing food items for anganwadis. Their venture started with the formation of self-help groups, where they pooled their resources and made a collective decision to invest in a business. This initiative was introduced to them by a team that visited their area to inform them about various government schemes.

Draupadi, the leader of the Shiv Mandir self-help group, explained that the initial group consisted of ten women. Over time, it evolved into a village organisation known as Nari Shakti Prerna Sangathan, followed by a cluster-level federation called Lakshya Prerna Samiti, Bhojla. The women were informed about the establishment of a Take-Home Ration (THR) plant, which required each member to contribute Rs 30,000 through their self-help group.

Impact of the Nutrition Plant on Women’s Lives

The establishment of the nutrition plant has significantly improved the lives of these women. Regular wages from their work have enabled them to manage household expenses more effectively and provide better educational opportunities for their children. Draupadi, who previously earned a living through sewing and agricultural work, noted that her family’s financial situation has improved dramatically since joining the group.

She stated that before their involvement in the self-help group, meeting basic household needs was challenging, and affording better schooling for their children was nearly impossible. Now, Draupadi emphasised that women who once faced resistance from their families are now treated with respect, attributing this change to the opportunities provided by the state government.

Another member, Saroj, who leads the Jai Maa Ratan Wali self-help group, highlighted the variety of food products prepared at the plant, including besan barfi, besan halwa, and moong dal porridge. She noted that the financial gains have allowed families to shift their children from government schools to private institutions, marking a significant step towards greater financial independence.

Overcoming Challenges and Gaining Respect

Vinita, another worker at the plant, shared that each self-help group typically consists of ten members, with 17 groups currently active in the area. She recalled that some women faced discouragement when considering joining these groups, yet those who persevered have achieved financial independence. Vinita noted that their newfound ability to earn has transformed their lives.

She explained that prior to joining the self-help groups, women often felt restricted and unable to venture out freely. However, their participation in the groups has empowered them to contribute to household incomes, thereby earning respect from family members who previously opposed their involvement.

The experiences of these women in Bhojla illustrate how collective savings, government support, and access to paid work can create new economic opportunities in rural communities. The most significant changes for these women include the ability to support their children’s education, contribute to household finances, and gain a stronger voice in family matters.
