In response to escalating onion prices, the central government has initiated a scheme to offer onions at Rs 35 per kilogram through its retail outlets. This measure aims to provide consumers with a more affordable alternative amidst soaring market prices.

The subsidised onions will be available through stores operated by the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED), the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India (NCCF), and Kendriya Bhandar. This initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to alleviate the financial burden on consumers impacted by high market prices.

As part of this effort, the government is enhancing the transport of onions via the Kanda Express, ensuring that supply meets consumer demand. Approximately 800 metric tonnes of onions are expected to be delivered to Delhi, where they will be sold at the established rate of Rs 35 per kilogram.

Kanda Express to Facilitate Distribution to Multiple Cities

The Kanda Express is set to initially distribute onion supplies to key cities, including Chennai, Ernakulam, Madurai, and Guwahati. Following this, a second consignment will be directed towards Delhi and other northern regions of India.

This rail-based logistics approach is designed to transport significant quantities of onions from agricultural production areas to major markets, thus aiming to enhance the availability in locations where prices have been rising steadily. By streamlining the distribution process, the government seeks to mitigate the effects of price increases on everyday consumers.

Officials have emphasised that the Centre intends to provide direct financial relief to consumers confronted with higher prices in the open market. By utilising its onion buffer stocks, the government plans to take corrective measures against rising prices, ensuring that onions are accessible to all.

Ensuring Adequate Onion Supply for Demand

Approximately 800 metric tonnes of onions are anticipated to reach the capital city, Delhi, via the Kanda Express, with sales occurring at Rs 35 per kilogram through NAFED, NCCF, and Kendriya Bhandar stores. This measure underscores the government’s dedication to boosting onion availability in critical markets.

Officials have previously assured that overall onion supply remains stable, with sufficient stocks in reserve to satisfy domestic demand. This strategy allows the government to intervene in the market effectively whenever prices surge.

The recent decision combines two essential strategies: significantly increasing the quantity of onions dispatched to major consumption centres through the Kanda Express and implementing fixed-rate sales at government-run retail outlets. Together, these measures aim to ensure better access to onions for the general public and curb any adverse effects from fluctuating market prices.
