CBI intensifies RG Kar probe; Special team visits hospital amid fresh questions

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has stepped up its probe into the high-profile rape and murder case of a young doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, with a seven-member special team visiting the hospital on Monday to review the progress of the investigation and inspect key locations linked to the case.

The visit is being viewed as significant, especially amid ongoing concerns regarding the pace and direction of the probe.

According to sources, the CBI team held a detailed meeting with the hospital’s Medical Superintendent and Vice-Principal, Saptarshi Chatterjee. Discussions reportedly focused on administrative records, the circumstances prevailing at the time of the incident, existing security arrangements, and various aspects of the investigation.

The team also conducted an on-ground inspection, visiting several critical departments within the hospital premises as part of their review.

Case background and earlier developments

The case dates back to August 9, 2024, when the unnatural death of a young doctor on duty at RG Kar Medical College came to light. Allegations of rape and murder soon followed, triggering widespread outrage and protests across the state.

Following a directive from the Calcutta High Court, the investigation was handed over to the CBI. In its chargesheet, the agency identified Kolkata Police civic volunteer Sanjay Roy as the accused, and a lower court later sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Despite the developments, the victim’s family has repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with the investigation, alleging that the complete truth has yet to emerge. They maintain that several crucial questions surrounding the incident remain unanswered.

Over the past months, the CBI has examined multiple hospital staff members, doctors, and other individuals, while also gathering documentary, digital, and forensic evidence.

Recent developments have added a new dimension to the case. A member of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) linked to the probe was transferred, and the latest visit by the CBI’s special team has fueled speculation about whether aspects of the investigation are being revisited or if new leads have surfaced.

Political reactions and administrative moves

Following the change in the state government, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has called for a speedy resolution of the case and justice for the victim’s family.

Meanwhile, State Health Minister Sharadwat Mukherjee announced at a government event on Sunday that the RG Kar case file would be reopened and relevant documents forwarded to the investigating agencies, further intensifying attention on the matter.

Awaiting clarity

Although the CBI has not issued any official statement regarding the latest developments, informed sources believe that the review of records and the on-site inspection could provide fresh momentum to the probe.

As the investigation continues, the victim’s family and the public remain hopeful for clarity, accountability, and justice in one of the state’s most closely watched cases.
