Canadian Prime Minister Carney Arrives in India to Advance Free Trade Agreement Negotiations

The CSR Journal Magazine

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to travel to India later today, focusing on enhancing collaboration in various sectors, including trade, energy, technology, and defense. A significant aim of the visit involves advancing the ongoing negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India. In a recent interview with CBC News, Canada’s Minister of International Trade, Maninder Sidhu, expressed a hopeful outlook for finalizing the FTA by year-end.

Successful Trade Achievements in Past Months

Minister Sidhu highlighted Canada’s recent achievements over the past nine months, noting successful trade agreements with countries such as Indonesia, Ecuador, and the UAE, alongside gaining access to European Union defense procurement initiatives that offer substantial export opportunities. Canada is the only non-EU nation to participate in this deal. Referencing a previous meeting between Prime Minister Carney and Indian Prime Minister Modi at the G20 summit in November, Sidhu underscored their mutual desire for an FTA, identifying this trip as a pivotal moment to initiate negotiations for the agreement.

Discussions on India-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement

Prior to the trip, Indian Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, engaged in a virtual meeting with Minister Sidhu to progress discussions on the proposed India-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). The goal of the CEPA is to enhance bilateral trade and economic cooperation between the two nations. Minister Goyal emphasized the discussions centered around strengthening business ties through regular engagement of delegations, aiming to create sustained progress in their economic partnership.

Building Momentum in Trade Relations

Minister Sidhu conveyed optimism following the virtual meeting with Goyal, saying he is eager to bolster the trading relationship and continue discussions on the CEPA. He pointed out that the annual bilateral trade between Canada and India exceeds USD 30 billion, which represents a solid foundation for unlocking new opportunities for Canadian exporters, thereby fostering stronger commercial ties and facilitating growth for businesses and workers in both regions.

Growing Economic Potential Between Two Nations

India has emerged as the fastest-growing major economy and a significant player in global commerce and technology. As of 2024, it ranked as Canada’s seventh-largest partner in goods and services trade, with total bilateral trade reaching USD 30.8 billion. During last year’s G20 Leaders’ Summit, Canada and India made a formal agreement to initiate negotiations for an ambitious Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, which aligns with Canada’s objective of more than doubling two-way trade to USD 70 billion by 2030.
