A 24-year-old man allegedly stabbed his former girlfriend multiple times before taking his own life in Mumbai’s Kalachowki area on Friday morning. The woman, identified as Manisha Yadav, sustained severe injuries and remains in critical condition at JJ Hospital, officials said.
The accused, Sonu Barai, an unemployed resident of Ambewadi in Kalachowki, was reportedly distraught after Yadav ended their relationship two weeks ago. According to police, he suspected her of being involved with another man.
Attack in Public View
The incident took place around 10:30 am near Digvijay Mill on Dattaram Lad Marg in Lalbaug’s Chinchpokli area. Barai had called Yadav to meet him to discuss their relationship. During the meeting, an argument broke out, and Barai, who had brought a kitchen knife, began stabbing her in a fit of rage.
Trying to save herself, Yadav ran into the nearby Aastha Maternity and Surgical Nursing Home, but Barai followed her inside and continued the assault. Witnesses and staff attempted to intervene, but he turned the knife on himself and slit his throat.
Police Statement
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 4) R. Ragasudha confirmed the sequence of events, stating,
“The incident occurred when the two met near Dattaram Lad Marg. The accused attacked the woman and later took his own life. The woman is currently in critical condition.”
Both were rushed to KEM Hospital, where Barai was declared dead. The Kalachowki Police have conducted a panchnama and are registering an FIR. Officers said Yadav’s statement will be recorded once her health stabilises.
Relationship Background
Investigators revealed that Barai and Yadav, who lived in the same neighbourhood, had been in a relationship for a few years. After the breakup, Barai became increasingly distressed and tried to reconcile, but Yadav refused. Police believe this rejection triggered the violent attack.
Locals who witnessed the incident said they were shocked by the brutality of the act. “People started screaming when they saw the woman running into the hospital. Everything happened within minutes,” said one witness.
Police are recording statements from family members and bystanders to determine the full sequence of events.
