On July 31, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) Chairman and Managing Director Sanjay Khanna announced the development of a new fuel known as “Xtreme Weather Grade (XWG) Diesel,” designed specifically for soldiers in the Indian Army. This product is intended to address the challenges faced by troops operating in extreme sub-zero conditions. During the launch event, Khanna underscored the importance of this fuel, labelling it a strategic necessity for enhancing operational efficiency in harsh environments.

In his address, Khanna remarked on the collaboration between BPCL and the Indian Army, which facilitated the creation of a fuel solution tailored for reliability in challenging terrains. He noted that the limitations of both human endurance and machine performance are considerably tested in these conditions, making dependable fuel essential for military operations.

Khanna further expressed that the partnership between the military and industry showcases India’s capabilities, combining the operational expertise of the armed forces with the innovative spirit of domestic companies. This synergy is expected to contribute positively to national interests and military readiness.

Ensuring Robust Supply Chain for Fuel Distribution

To guarantee timely availability of XWG Diesel at the front lines, BPCL has established a comprehensive supply chain. The Chairman highlighted the efforts made to maintain uninterrupted fuel supply from production at the Bina Refinery to strategic storage at Bathinda, ensuring that soldiers have immediate access to this vital resource.

Khanna reported that the Xtreme Weather Grade Diesel underwent extensive field trials alongside Indian Army teams at high-altitude locations. These trials were essential to validate the product’s efficacy and performance under real-world conditions. The successful completion of these evaluations demonstrates BPCL’s commitment to scientific excellence and innovation.

The development of this next-generation diesel not only showcases technological advancements but also aligns with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, promoting self-reliance in various sectors, including defence. BPCL’s proactive measures to streamline supply are regarded as crucial for ensuring operational continuity in challenging environments where soldiers operate.

Army Chief Applauds the Collaborative Effort

General Dhiraj Seth, Chief of Army Staff, praised the introduction of Xtreme Weather Grade Diesel, referring to it as a “game changer” for Indian Army operations, particularly in high-altitude and extreme temperature zones. His remarks highlighted the significance of this fuel in addressing fatigue and morale issues that troops often face in such arduous conditions.

The Army Chief specifically noted the technical capabilities of the new diesel, which can withstand temperatures ranging from a pour point of minus 42 degrees Celsius to a flash point of approximately 50 degrees Celsius. He described the extensive potential benefits of the fuel for military operations across varying terrains, underscoring the far-reaching consequences that effective fuel solutions can have on operational readiness.

General Seth commended the collaborative approach that transformed the challenge into a viable product within just a year, recognising it as a model example of Atmanirbhar Bharat in practice. This collaborative effort reflects the potential for similar initiatives to enhance defence capabilities and ensure the welfare of soldiers in the field.
