The CSR Journal Magazine

A police officer is alleged to have opened fire at villagers while trying to flee from a woman’s home in Madhubani district, Bihar, resulting in the death of a 50-year-old man and injuries to three others. The incident occurred around 1 am on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, in Balirajgarh village.

The accused, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Chandra Mohan Singh, was stationed at a police picket established to secure a nearby mining site. According to local law enforcement, the ASI was reportedly discovered inside a woman’s residence by villagers, who subsequently surrounded the house and confined him to a room.

In an attempt to escape, Singh allegedly discharged four rounds from his service revolver, leading to chaos and injuries among the villagers. Following the shooting, he fled the scene. The gunfire resulted in four individuals sustaining injuries. Ashok Yadav, aged fifty, later succumbed to his wounds at a government hospital, while the other three victims are currently receiving treatment, with their conditions described as critical.

Details Surrounding the Shooting

Madhubani Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Yogendra Kumar stated that the accused officer had a history of visiting the woman’s house to collect personal items. Allegedly, he entered the residence again on the night of the incident with inappropriate intentions. Upon noticing his presence, villagers raised an alarm, prompting others to converge on the area in an effort to apprehend him.

Feeling cornered, the ASI is said to have opened fire with his service weapon before making his escape. SSP Kumar confirmed that the officer discharged three to four rounds, resulting in the death of Ashok Yadav and injuries to three others. The injured individuals were transported to Sadar Hospital for medical attention.

Following the incident, a police team arrived promptly at the scene and ensured that the injured were taken to the hospital. The ASI has since been suspended, and a murder charge has been filed against him. Authorities are actively searching for the officer, who remains at large.

Political Reactions to the Incident

The incident has sparked political controversy, with Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav criticising the Bihar government and alleging that the police force has become complicit in criminal activities. In a post on social media platform X, Yadav claimed that ASI Chandra Mohan Singh entered the woman’s home with the intent to commit a crime and resorted to gunfire when confronted by her family and other villagers.

Yadav asserted that Ashok Yadav and another individual, Phulo Devi, were killed on the spot, while two others remain in critical condition. He further accused the state government of failing to take action against police personnel implicated in violent incidents. Citing previous cases of alleged custodial deaths and police-related killings, he stated that the police have transformed into criminals under the current administration.

The RJD leader also questioned the lack of accountability for senior district officials, including the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police, who have not been transferred despite ongoing allegations of police misconduct in Madhubani. This incident has raised significant concerns regarding law enforcement practices and accountability in the region.
