Bihar Election Shock: Owaisi’s AIMIM Nearly Wiped Out in Seemanchal

The CSR Journal Magazine

Seemanchal, comprising the four districts of Araria, Katihar, Kishanganj and Purnea, has turned out to be a major setback for Owaisi’s AIMIM. These districts hold 24 Assembly seats and a significant Muslim vote bank. However, as results unfold, the party that appears headed for a major loss is Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM.

Why Is Owaisi Losing the 4 Key Seats?

AIMIM had delivered a surprise in 2020 by winning five seats—all from the Seemanchal region. But as of 10:40 am today, the party is leading in only two seats across Bihar. The party had been banking heavily on these constituencies to maintain relevance.

The two seats where AIMIM is currently ahead are Balrampur in Katihar and Baisi in Purnea. Interestingly, Balrampur was not among the constituencies the party had targeted strongly this time.

Except for Baisi, Owaisi’s party is trailing in all four key seats—Amour, Bahadurganj, Jokihat and Kochadhaman—where it had emerged victorious in 2020. The biggest blow came when four of its MLAs defected to the RJD, leaving only one—Akhtarul Iman of Amour—still with AIMIM. Iman, too, is currently trailing from his seat.

Who Is Leading in the Bihar Elections?

In the previous election, the NDA had won 12 seats in Seemanchal while the Mahagathbandhan (MGB) secured seven. This time, trends show the region moving decisively towards the NDA.

As of now, the NDA is leading in 18 constituencies, while the MGB is ahead in only four.

BJP’s performance has dipped slightly—leading in seven seats compared to eight last time. The JDU, however, has shown significant improvement, with its tally rising from four to nine. The RJD has retained only one seat, similar to the last election. Congress has dropped from five seats to three, while CPI(ML), which had one seat earlier, is currently at zero.
