Bengal Nurse Dies of Severe Burns After Husband Sets Her on Fire Over EMI Dispute

The CSR Journal Magazine

A tragic incident in West Bengal’s Cooch Behar district has left a 35-year-old nurse dead after she was allegedly set on fire by her husband following an argument over the repayment of their car loan instalments. Police said the incident occurred late Wednesday night at the couple’s rented residence, sparking shock among residents of the locality.

The victim, identified as Chhanda Roy, worked in the maternity department of MJN Medical College and Hospital. According to preliminary information from police, the couple had been living in the rented house for more than three years and had frequently argued about financial issues, particularly the equated monthly instalments (EMIs) of a car loan.

Victim Ran Out in Flames

According to witnesses and neighbours, chaos erupted in the neighbourhood when the woman ran out of her house engulfed in flames. Residents rushed to her aid and immediately took her to MJN Medical College and Hospital. However, doctors declared her dead soon after she was brought in due to severe burn injuries.

The victim’s husband, Ranjit Roy, who works as a driver, also sustained burn injuries during the incident. He has been admitted to the same hospital for treatment and is currently under medical supervision. Police said his statement will be recorded once his condition improves.

Financial Stress and Frequent Arguments

Investigators believe the dispute may have stemmed from financial stress related to the car loan. According to police sources, the vehicle had been purchased so the husband could use it for work and earn a livelihood. However, disagreements over paying the monthly instalments reportedly caused repeated quarrels between the couple.

Officials added that tensions between the two had escalated several times in the past, with the matter even reaching the women’s police station earlier. However, no formal complaint had been filed at the time.

Police Begin Detailed Investigation

Following the woman’s death, police launched a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities are examining whether the case amounts to murder or whether other factors may have contributed to the tragedy.

The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. Officials said further evidence will be gathered before filing formal charges.

The couple also has a young daughter who studies at a boarding school in Darjeeling. Police said they are continuing to investigate the case and questioning people close to the family to establish the sequence of events leading to the fatal incident.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over domestic disputes escalating into violent tragedies.
