The Padma Hilsa Arrives in West Bengal: A Durga Puja Treat

The CSR Journal Magazine

After prolonged discussions with Bangladesh, a much-anticipated consignment of Padma Hilsa has finally reached West Bengal, bringing great delight to Bengali food lovers just in time for the Durga Puja celebrations.

Consignment Details

According to sources at the Petrapole port, a total of 37 tons of Hilsa arrived from Bangladesh. The first batch, consisting of 12 tons, entered India in three trucks on a Wednesday night. This was followed by a larger shipment of 25 tons in five more trucks. On Thursday, the trucks carrying the valuable cargo crossed the border, a moment marked by the presence of a Bangladeshi Deputy High Commissioner and the Petrapole port’s LPAI manager.

Market Dynamics

The Hilsa, weighing between 800 grams and 1.2 kilograms, was brought to the Howrah wholesale fish market, where it was then auctioned off to retail traders. While the wholesale price is reported to be between ₹1,800 to ₹2,000 per kilogram, the retail price in Kolkata and its suburbs is expected to be significantly higher, likely ranging from ₹2,200 to ₹2,500 per kilogram.

A Culinary Delight for the Festive Season

Despite the high cost, the arrival of the Padma Hilsa has generated immense excitement. While local Hilsa is available, the unique flavor and texture of the Padma variety are considered unparalleled and are a cherished part of Bengali festive cuisine. The successful import of this delicacy marks a positive step in trade relations and provides a much-needed festive boost for local markets.
