Assam Announces Rs 50,000 Crore Adani Power Project in Dhubri

The CSR Journal Magazine

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a landmark investment of nearly Rs 50,000 crore with the foundation stone laying of Adani Power Limited’s ultra-supercritical thermal power plant in Dhubri district on September 20, 2026. Sarma stated that the 3,200 MW facility will enable Assam to become a power-surplus state.

In his remarks, Sarma expressed optimism about the future, stating, “Today, we have witnessed an investment of Rs 50,000 crore. This plant will generate 3,200 MW of electricity, making Assam a power-surplus state. This will be the largest private investment in Assam.” He further highlighted that this project marks the beginning of more opportunities in the state.

The Rs 48,000-crore initiative is poised to create approximately 20,000 jobs during construction and an estimated 5,000 jobs once operational. The facility will comprise four units, each with a capacity of 800 MW, utilising ultra-supercritical technology that emphasises high efficiency and modern environmental safeguards.

Investment Ecosystem in Assam Expands

This power plant is part of a larger investment strategy by the Adani Group, which includes a combined power investment of Rs 63,000 crore in Assam. This broader initiative will feature two pumped storage plants with a total capacity of 2,700 MW. The Assam government anticipates that investments across various sectors in the state could exceed Rs 80,000 crore in the next three to four years.

Adani Group Director Jeet Adani highlighted the collaborative spirit between the company and the Assam government, stating that their journey in the state has been propelled by a shared commitment to tangible development. He expressed admiration for Chief Minister Sarma’s urgency to translate plans into reality, describing him as someone who strives to see rapid progress on the ground.

Drawing a parallel between Sarma and corporate leadership, Jeet Adani remarked, “Even though he is the Chief Minister of Assam, the way he works makes it feel like he is the CEO of the state. He keeps an eye on the progress, timeline, and delivery of every single project.” This approach has fostered an environment where economic growth and social responsibility can coexist.

Transformative Impact on the Region

The Chapar power plant is expected to significantly bolster Assam’s energy infrastructure, ensuring reliable electricity for household, commercial, and industrial needs. Moreover, the project is anticipated to create pathways for local contractors and suppliers to engage in the growing industrial ecosystem.

In addition to the power venture, the Adani Group is also making commitments in the aviation and cement sectors within Assam. The company has initiated various community development projects focusing on flood relief, healthcare, education, and livelihoods across the state.

Jeet Adani reflected on his extensive engagement with Assam, noting that he has visited the state around 40 times in the past five years. He emphasised the changing economic landscape of the Northeast, stating that the region is evolving into a dynamic hub for economic growth alongside its rich cultural heritage.

He concluded by asserting that the Northeast is now emerging as a vital engine for economic progress and infrastructure development, with Assam at the forefront of this transformation as the gateway to the region.
