Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed strong criticism towards the Congress party, stating that its leaders are engaging in “deception” by attempting to involve party leader Pawan Khera in legal matters. Sarma’s remarks, made on April 8 through a post on X, suggest that Congress members are disseminating “completely fabricated documents,” which he claims have previously been debunked by his team.
In his statement, Sarma asserted that Congress’s desperate behaviour is undermining its credibility, especially as they are allegedly pushing Khera towards potential legal repercussions. He expressed concern that the actions of Congress have strayed beyond political discourse, labelling them as “outright deception.”
The Chief Minister further emphasised that the citizens of Assam would respond significantly to Congress’s actions and warned that the party leadership would be held accountable for what he termed as deceitful practices.
Pawan Khera’s Legal Troubles
On the same day, Pawan Khera sought anticipatory bail from the Telangana High Court related to a complaint registered against him in Assam. Details of the petition remain unlisted, as the case unfolds. Khera has previously accused Sarma and his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, of various misconducts during a press conference in New Delhi.
Both Sarma and his wife have categorically rejected these allegations. Following Khera’s claims concerning the Chief Minister’s wife possessing three passports and the non-disclosure of certain property in Sarma’s election affidavit, an FIR was filed by Riniki Bhuyan Sharma against Khera.
Subsequently, Assam Police conducted searches at Khera’s residence, which led Sarma to comment that Khera had “run away” to Hyderabad after learning of the police visit. He remarked that “the law will take its own course” in addressing the situation.
Congress Party’s Response and Political Climate
In light of the ongoing developments, Congress leaders have rallied behind Khera, decrying the BJP’s approach as a manifestation of its arrogance and guilt. Most notably, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, a prominent Congress figure, issued a statement on X, expressing solidarity with Khera. She condemned the actions taken against him, framing them as a violation of democratic principles that underpin Indian governance.
Vadra’s comments underscore a rising tension between Congress and the BJP, suggesting that the latter’s efforts to undermine Khera are viewed as attempts to stifle dissent within the political landscape. She articulated a view that the fundamentals of democracy involve questioning those in power and resisting unjust treatment.
As the political atmosphere in Assam intensifies, the state is set to hold elections on February 1, 2025, with results expected to be announced on May 4. The unfolding legal disputes involving Khera and Sarma may influence voter sentiments and perceptions of both parties in the lead-up to these crucial elections.
