Complaints were filed from both India and Pakistan side on players trying to increase the hostility that exists between the two nations. Acting on this complaint, ICC has taken disciplinary action against T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav and Haris Rauf and Sahibzada Farhan. Suryakumar Yadav has been imposed a fine of 30% of his total fees of the match for his remark post-match on the Pahalgam terror attack during the match with Pakistan, while Pakistani fast bowler Haris Rauf was imposed a similar fine for his controversial gesture. While another Pakistani player Sahibzada Farhan has been given warning for his symbolic gun-fire celebration.
Has the letter of punishment been issued?
ICC hasn’t issued any official letter till now, as per sources, the board is waiting for the tournament to end, owing to the sensitivity of the matter. India and Pakistan are scheduled to face off in the Asia Cup final on Sunday (September 28).
Sources confirmed that while ICC was about to make a press release on the sanctions, it was put on hold for two reasons, first being the final showdown that is on Sunday and second being BCCI not agreeing with Richardson’s assertion on the captain breaching the Code of Conduct, it is his right to stand by the country’s Army and the victims of terror attack and families.
Source even said that if the Indian board won’t be able to defend the captain who paid tribute to the Indian army, this will be a poor optics. Leave punishment, source said that BCCI should not even accept warning.
What happened to Suryakumar Yadav during the ICC hearing?
A complaint against Suryakumar Yadav was fined after the Indian team won on September 14 against Pakistan. Post the match, he dedicated the win to the Pahalgam terror attack and the Indian armed forces. During the hearing on Thursday, Suryakumar wasn’t pleaded guilty to the charge, was given warning to not to make any statement that can make the situation hostile.
What happened to Pakistani players during the ICC hearing?
Pakistani player Haris Rauf was given warning for making actions and using ‘abusive language’ mocking the planes that crashed; however, Rauf kept on saying that there wasn’t anything political. Another player, Farhan, pleaded not guilty, claiming that the gun-fire celebration was his half century celebration, which is a traditional way of celebrating in his ethnic Pakhtun tribe, he said.
Why does this tension escalate between India and Pakistan?
The tension between the two teams escalated when the Indian team refused to do the traditional handshake with opponent Pakistani players, showing solidarity with the Pahalgam attack victims and family members of victims. 26 people were brutally killed at Pahalgam by Pakistan-supported terrorists in April this year.
What controversies have happened since the Asia Cup started?
Ever since the tension increased between the two countries, the diplomatic ties have been affected, Indian government has released a policy to bar any bilateral relationship with Pakistan, even in places where venue isn’t common. But the Indian government gave permission for matches in international games.
On the other hand, Pakistan did not send a hockey team to the Asia Cup in India, citing security concerns, even though India was fine to issue visas to the Hockey team.
Controversies did not stop there, during the Asia Cup ongoing matches, PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) had blamed referee Andy Pycroft for the handshake controversy. And the recent controversy is the gestures and foul language by players during and post-match.
