Arjun Rampal Reflects on 26/11 Trauma, Calls Dhurandhar his ‘Revenge’ to the Attack

The CSR Journal Magazine

At the Hello! Hall of Fame Awards held in Mumbai, actor Arjun Rampal spoke about his personal experiences during the 2008 Mumbai attacks and how they influenced his performance in the film ‘Dhurandhar’. The event took place on Sunday, and Rampal used the occasion to recount the horrifying moments he witnessed on the night of the attacks, aligning it with his portrayal of a character in the movie.

Details of the Night of Terror

Rampal narrated that he had intended to celebrate his birthday at the Taj Hotel, one of the major sites targeted during the attacks. He recalled that he was at the hotel, waiting to pick up friends when the chaos ensued. “I was in this hotel during the 26/11 attacks. We were about to head to the Taj Hotel for my birthday celebration when the first bomb exploded near Mahim. The sound was so intense that it caused the glass to shake, leaving us startled,” he stated. Initially believing it was a gang-related incident, Rampal and others soon realized the severity of the situation.

Immediate Aftermath of the Attacks

Rampal indicated that, as the situation developed, a flurry of phone calls began to inform them of a gang war occurring in Colaba. Within a short period, the hotel was sealed off for safety. He recounted how a friend, Adarsh Jatia, offered him accommodation for the night because it was deemed unsafe to leave. “On my birthday, I witnessed the horrors of 26/11 unfold,” he reflected.

Connection Between Personal Trauma and Film Role

Having experienced the attacks first-hand, Rampal shared that ‘Dhurandhar’ became a form of “revenge” for him. He expressed that the emotions he felt that morning upon returning home were overwhelming, as he had to pull over several times because he felt unwell. “When Aditya Dhar described the scene from 26/11, I knew I had the opportunity to express my feelings of vengeance, and that is precisely what I did with ‘Dhurandhar’. All I wish to express is Bharat Mata Ki Jai,” he conveyed.

Role and Film Highlights

In ‘Dhurandhar’, Rampal plays the role of ISI Major Iqbal, who is depicted as a key orchestrator behind the attacks. A notable scene showcases Iqbal reveling and dancing while communicating with the terrorists during the assault. The film features an ensemble cast including Sanjay Dutt, R Madhavan, Akshaye Khanna, Ranveer Singh, and Rakesh Bedi, among others.

Current Status of ‘Dhurandhar’

The second installment, titled ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’, is currently performing well at the box office. The film has garnered attention for its intense storytelling and the emotional depths explored by the cast, primarily driven by the vision of director and producer Aditya Dhar.
