Apple’s iOS 26.4 Beta Introduces Streaming Apple TV Shows to CarPlay Screens

The CSR Journal Magazine

Users with iPhones may soon have the ability to stream content from Apple TV directly to CarPlay-enabled screens. This new functionality, named “AirPlay Video in the car,” has emerged in the latest iOS 26.4 beta update.

Initial references to this feature were made during its announcement at the WWDC 2025 event, although it has not yet been made available to the general public. The current beta phase indicates that the feature may be rolled out soon.

Streaming Details and Limitations

The “AirPlay video in the car” functionality enables users to watch favorite videos from their iPhones on CarPlay displays, provided the vehicle is parked. This application of Apple TV is significant as it grants users a dedicated space on CarPlay similar to that of an app, facilitating the streaming of shows and movies directly onto the car’s screen using AirPlay, enhancing the experience beyond basic mirroring.

Safety Concerns and Requirements

Due to safety regulations, the new feature will only be accessible when the vehicle is not in motion. Additionally, vehicle manufacturers will need to upgrade their infotainment systems to support both CarPlay and the new AirPlay video integration. This requirement means that not all cars will automatically receive the streaming capability even after the iOS update is widely released.

Future Updates and Voice Integration

The developer documentation indicates that Apple is laying the groundwork for enhanced in-car entertainment options through CarPlay, with the iOS 26.4 release anticipated to include these features. Furthermore, the beta version will introduce support for voice-based conversational applications within Apple CarPlay.

Nonetheless, this voice control capability is expected to have limitations, as Apple may restrict third-party AI applications from being activated with a wake word such as “Hey Siri.” Users might need to manually launch the app before interacting with the chatbot.
