Apple Set To Launch Smart Glasses In 2027 With Privacy As A Key Feature

The CSR Journal Magazine

Apple is reportedly preparing to enter the smart glasses market, with a device allegedly in development for a 2027 launch. The company is said to be focussing on user privacy, an issue that has reportedly impacted the acceptance of competing products.

There has been a significant amount of concern regarding privacy among potential smart glasses users. Previous products, such as those from Meta, have faced backlash due to their capability to capture photos and videos without the knowledge or consent of individuals nearby. This has led to phrases such as “pervert glasses” being attached to these devices.

Bloomberg suggests that Apple will approach the development of its glasses with a particular emphasis on privacy, aiming to establish its reputation further in this area prior to the product’s release.

Design Features and Privacy Measures

The smart glasses are said to utilise on-device processing, meaning no data will allegedly be transmitted to external servers, addressing a major privacy concern. Furthermore, it is expected that Apple will refrain from integrating facial recognition or always-on recording features, differentiating itself from existing competitive models.

Apple is also contemplating additional hardware and software safeguards. One possibility is the development of a version without a camera, or one that features a camera strictly used for sensing purposes only. This would prevent it from being able to capture images or videos, aligning with Apple’s commitment to privacy.

The company is also believed to be implementing similar privacy-focused innovations in its other products, like the AI-enabled AirPods and future iterations of the AirPods Pro, potentially featuring external cameras that assist users without invading others’ privacy.

Challenges Faced By Competitors

Apple’s focus on privacy comes in the wake of widespread discontent regarding Meta’s camera-supported smart glasses. There have been numerous reports of individuals being recorded without their consent, contributing to a surge of negative sentiments toward such devices.

This backlash has manifested in public protests against Meta’s products in both the UK and the US. Recently, an activist group, Everyone Hates Elon, targeted a promotional campaign featuring Kylie Jenner with an overlay implying constant surveillance.

Meta has begun to address these public relations issues. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, announced that the platform would implement bans on users who upload inappropriate content that involves harassment or the exploitation of unsuspecting individuals. He urged for a more responsible use of smart glasses to prevent misuse in public spaces.

Furthermore, Meta has suggested on its website that users should deactivate their glasses in environments where privacy is crucial, such as medical facilities, locker rooms, or places of worship, showcasing its awareness of the ongoing concerns about privacy breaches in modern technology.
