Anthropic’s Mythos 5 AI Model Approved for Broader Use in the US

The CSR Journal Magazine

Anthropic PBC has received approval from the US government to re-establish some access to its advanced Mythos 5 artificial intelligence model. This decision follows the resolution of concerns raised by the previous administration regarding national security threats posed by the technology. According to a letter from Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to Anthropic’s chief computer officer, the company worked closely with the US government to address these risks, resulting in significant progress.

The newly clarified status of Mythos 5 indicates that it can now be released to a select group of trusted partners. The approval alleviates tensions that surfaced two weeks prior when the US government prohibited Anthropic from allowing foreign nationals to access both Mythos 5 and another model, Fable 5, due to fears that security measures might be circumvented. This restriction led Anthropic to revoke global access to these models.

Negotiations and Future Prospects

In response to the federal directive, Commerce Department spokesman Benno Kass stated that the department worked diligently to ensure that America remains a leader in AI while prioritising national security. The letter from the Commerce Department, dated September 29, does not alter the restrictions regarding the use of Fable 5, hinting at continuing concerns about that model.

In a statement, Anthropic confirmed that it received notice permitting the redeployment of Mythos 5 to a limited group of cyber defenders and infrastructure providers. The company stated its intention to promptly restore access for the approved providers. There remains uncertainty surrounding the specific measures that Anthropic undertook to meet government requirements, particularly concerning the potential for ‘jailbreaking’ the models. Discussions with US officials are expected to continue as Anthropic seeks to expand access and reintroduce Fable 5 for general use.

Moreover, Anthropic is reportedly collaborating with the government to create a policy framework for future scenarios involving AI model deployment, indicating an ongoing commitment to adapt in this rapidly evolving field.

Impact on the AI Industry

The restrictions placed on Anthropic’s models have sent ripples through the wider AI industry. The current climate has especially affected other companies like OpenAI, which has postponed the release of a new AI model, GPT-5.6, due to similar pressures from the previous administration. OpenAI announced that it will distribute a preview version to select government-approved partners in the coming weeks, indicating a tighter regulatory environment for AI technologies.

This situation marks a significant intervention by the US government into AI operations, highlighting concerns regarding the security of sophisticated models. The recent escalations came shortly after Anthropic confidentially filed for an initial public offering, with its valuation reportedly exceeding Rs 7,000 crore. This intersection of governmental scrutiny and corporate aspirations adds another layer of complexity to the narrative surrounding advanced AI development.

High-level negotiations between Anthropic executives, including co-founder Tom Brown, and senior US officials have been taking place, with the aim of addressing security issues tied to Mythos 5 and Fable 5. In these delicate discussions, Anthropic’s CEO Dario Amodei reportedly adopted a low-key approach, facilitating dialogue to mitigate conflict between the company and government representatives.
