Android to Introduce Tap to Share Feature Similar to Apple’s AirDrop

The CSR Journal Magazine

Android users may soon experience a feature reminiscent of Apple’s AirDrop functionality. Sources indicate that a Tap to Share capability is in development, aimed at simplifying the process of sharing files and contacts by merely tapping two smartphones together. Evidence of this impending feature has been identified in Samsung’s One UI 9, as well as within Google Play Services and Android 17’s system-level code.

Feature Development Across Multiple Platforms

An initial discovery of the Tap to Share feature occurred in September 2025 within Samsung’s One UI 8.5, reappearing again in One UI 9 as a tap-based file transfer option utilizing NFC technology. It has been noted that this capability is not limited to Samsung devices. Analysis of the coding within Google Play Services and Samsung’s Quick Share suggests NFC may serve merely as an activation trigger, while actual file transfers would be managed by Quick Share.

Cross-Device Compatibility Expected

Should this feature be fully implemented, it could allow for a seamless cross-device tap-to-share experience across different manufacturers. Google is anticipated to announce this innovation in tandem with the stable release of Android 17, with Samsung products likely being among the first to adopt it, as the company is reportedly advancing this feature through its developmental efforts.

Current Capabilities of Samsung Galaxy S26 Series

The latest Samsung Galaxy S26 lineup already incorporates an AirDrop-like sharing option through Quick Share, with the rollout initially commencing in South Korea and gradually extending to additional regions. This feature permits Galaxy users to transfer photos, videos, and files directly to iPhones and Macs by utilizing a method similar to Apple’s AirDrop. To send files, users need to initiate Quick Share, seek out nearby Apple devices, and tap to transmit the data.

Settings and Requirements for File Sharing

It is important to note that the feature is not pre-activated on the Samsung Galaxy S26 series. Users must access Quick Share settings to enable the “Share with Apple devices” option. Certain conditions must also be fulfilled for successful file transfers: the receiving iPhone must have AirDrop set to “Everyone,” and Galaxy smartphones must ensure their own visibility settings are appropriately adjusted for sharing.

Availability on Other Devices

The Tap to Share feature has also been made available on select Google Pixel smartphones following a recent software update. With the anticipated introduction of Android 17, it may soon provide an AirDrop-like tap-to-share functionality that is compatible across a range of devices and brands, enhancing the ease of file sharing among users.
