The CSR Journal Magazine

A court in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, has sentenced a man, his father, and his brother to death for the double murder of his wife and her cousin. In addition to the death penalty, each of the three convicts has been fined Rs 1 lakh. The ruling concludes a four-year-long legal process stemming from the shocking events of May 27, 2022.

Details of the Case Emerge

The incident took place in the Etmadpur area of Agra, where the accused, Gaurav, along with his family, murdered his wife, Pooja, and her cousin, Shivam Sisodia, due to suspicions of an extramarital affair. Shivam, a 31-year-old resident of a nearby house, frequently visited Gaurav and Pooja’s home, raising suspicions among the family about the nature of their relationship.

Incident Description

On the day of the incident, Shivam visited Pooja at her residence when Gaurav and his family allegedly caught them together. The confrontation escalated, and both were forcibly pulled into the street. Eyewitness accounts suggest that Gaurav, along with his father, Madan, and brother, Abhishek, attacked Pooja and Shivam using sticks. Once both victims were incapacitated, they were reportedly murdered with a farsa, a sharp-edged weapon, leading to brutal injuries. Notably, reports indicate that Shivam was struck 22 times within a minute.

Discovery and Investigation

Following the murders, Pooja’s body was discovered at the front of their residence, while Shivam’s body was left on the street. In a contradictory behavior, Gaurav was observed sitting near Pooja’s body, apparently in distress, while his father and brother went to the Etmad-ud-Daula police station to surrender. Law enforcement officials recovered the murder weapon and a blood-stained stick from a nearby drain.

Trial Proceedings

During the trial, 14 witnesses were presented, with significant evidence including testimonies from Shivam’s brother, Abhishek, and CCTV footage capturing the incident. The prosecution presented a compelling case leading the court to conclude that all three accused were culpable of the murders. Additional Deputy Commissioner Mohit Pal confirmed the court’s decision to convict Gaurav, his father Madan, and his brother Abhishek.

Verdict and Reactions

After careful consideration of the evidence, the court imposed the death penalty on all three convicts. In contrast, the accused’s mother was acquitted due to a lack of incriminating evidence. The convicts displayed no apparent emotional response after the sentencing. As they exited the courthouse, they indicated plans to appeal the verdict in the High Court, expressing confidence in the judicial process.
