Four Children Injured as Water Tank Bursts During Mermaid Show at UP Fair

The CSR Journal Magazine

Four children sustained injuries when a water-filled glass tank exploded during a mermaid show at the Dada Miyan Urs fair in Khalepur village, located in Bahraich district, Uttar Pradesh. The incident reportedly occurred late on Monday night while a young woman, dressed as a mermaid, was performing underwater stunts inside the tank. At the time of the accident, approximately 20 to 25 spectators were present, according to information provided by local police.

Details of the Accident

The transparent tank, which contained thousands of litres of water, allegedly burst due to excessive water pressure, resulting in shattered glass and water being dispersed across the venue. Additional Superintendent of Police (City) Ayush Vikram Singh stated that the performer was holding her breath and executing stunts when the tank ruptured. The sudden explosion caused panic among the audience, leading to the immediate injury of the children who were in proximity to the tank.

The injured children were promptly transported to the Fakharpur Community Health Centre for medical attention. Reports indicate that two of the children were discharged after receiving first aid, while the other two, who sustained more serious injuries, were referred to Bahraich Medical College for further treatment. The swift response of medical personnel was crucial in addressing the immediate health concerns of the injured individuals.

Authorities have expressed concern regarding the safety measures in place at the fair. It was revealed that the organisers had only obtained permission for the religious proceedings associated with the Urs fair. However, they had also set up various attractions, including the mermaid show and swings, without the necessary approvals from local administration.

Legal Actions and Administrative Response

In light of the incident, a case has been registered against seven organisers under relevant legal provisions for allegedly conducting activities without the required permissions and for negligence. Four of these organisers have already been arrested, while efforts are ongoing to locate the remaining three individuals involved in the event. The police have stated that these actions are necessary to ensure accountability and to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Following the accident, the local administration has ordered the immediate suspension of all activities related to the fair, including the mermaid show and other attractions. Only the approved religious proceedings will be permitted to continue. This decision aims to prioritise the safety of attendees and to address the public’s concerns regarding safety standards at such events.

The unfortunate incident has raised questions about the oversight and regulation of public events in the region. Local authorities are expected to review safety protocols to prevent future occurrences and to ensure that all events are conducted in a secure environment for both performers and spectators. The community is awaiting further updates as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the tank’s failure and the subsequent injuries sustained by the children.
