Adoor Gopalakrishnan Critiques Commercial Cinema for Underestimating Viewers

The CSR Journal Magazine

Adoor Gopalakrishnan, a veteran filmmaker from Kerala, has expressed concerns regarding the way commercial cinema perceives its audience. Speaking at the India Today South Conclave 2026 held in Kochi, he asserted that filmmakers often regard viewers as lacking the ability to think critically. He emphasised that cinema should not merely act as a source of entertainment but should also challenge audiences to engage thoughtfully with the material presented to them.

According to Gopalakrishnan, the tendencies in commercial cinema mirror a belief that viewers prefer superficial content. He stated, “In commercial cinema, they believe the audience is stupid and that the audience has no power to think.” The director acknowledged that this viewpoint may hold some truth, citing a “tightrope” between appealing to an audience’s desire for entertainment and encouraging them to think.

The director underlined his belief that cinema has significantly evolved over the years, moving beyond its historical role as merely a leisure activity. He remarked, “Traditionally, cinema has been taken for passing time,” but added that contemporary cinema offers much more, suggesting it has achieved a level of depth and complexity that enhances its value as an art form.

Concerns About Easily Consumable Content

Adoor Gopalakrishnan further raised concerns regarding the current trend of producing easily consumable films. He believes that many filmmakers neglect their responsibility to provide a meaningful cinematic experience. “What people are doing is producing what’s easily consumable,” he stated, criticising a lack of artistic commitment in the industry.

The filmmaker called for a greater focus on providing cinema that enriches the audience’s experience and imparts valuable insights rather than simply catering to entertainment needs. The director articulated his respect for the audience, insisting that viewers should also appreciate the effort that goes into filmmaking.

He expressed a sense of accountability for the time audiences dedicate to his films: “I am borrowing two hours of your life to watch my film. I have to make it worthwhile for my audience.” This statement reflects his commitment to creating films that offer something substantial and thought-provoking.

Moreover, Gopalakrishnan highlighted that his films are designed to reveal new layers of meaning with repeated viewings. He aims for his work to remain resonant and significant long after the initial viewing, underscoring the importance of depth in storytelling.

Upcoming Collab with Mammootty

In addition to his insightful commentary on cinema, Adoor Gopalakrishnan is preparing for an exciting project with renowned actor Mammootty. Their collaboration, titled ‘Padayaatra’, marks their first joint endeavour in 32 years, making this a highly anticipated reunion. The film will be their fourth project together, further solidifying their long-standing professional relationship.

A brief teaser for ‘Padayaatra’, lasting one minute and 14 seconds, has been released, introducing Mammootty in the role of a doctor. The character’s seemingly tranquil life is disrupted by a suspected Maoist attack, resulting in police scrutiny. This premise suggests a narrative that may incorporate elements of social commentary, aligning with Gopalakrishnan’s artistic vision.

The forthcoming collaboration not only excites fans but also underscores Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s continued relevance in the film industry, promoting a narrative that engages audiences on multiple levels. With his critical approach to filmmaking and respect for viewer engagement, Gopalakrishnan aims to contribute meaningfully to the landscape of Indian cinema.
