The CSR Journal Magazine

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari laid the foundation stone for the Adani Arogya Mandir, a 2,000-bed hospital, on Thursday in New Town, Kolkata. The project, involving an investment of over Rs 4,000 crore, is situated within the Bengal Silicon Valley Tech Hub, covering an area of 51.75 acres.

This initiative aims to establish a comprehensive healthcare ecosystem intended for eastern India and beyond, as stated by the Adani Group. The facility is projected to serve more than 200,000 inpatients and over 2 million outpatients annually. It is expected to create around 10,000 jobs throughout its healthcare framework.

The multi-speciality hospital will feature transitional care facilities, a Meditel, and a Vishram Gruh, aimed at providing accommodation for the families of patients receiving treatment. Adhikari remarked on the hospital’s potential to enhance medical tourism and referred to the day as a historic and significant one. He expressed optimism that the development of Bengal is crucial for the broader vision of ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’.

Hospital Aims to Support EWS

Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, outlined that the hospital will function as a world-class, not-for-profit institution comprising 2,000 beds. Significantly, 1,000 of these beds will be allocated to economically disadvantaged sections who qualify under state and central health insurance programmes. Initially, the hospital will prioritise cancer care, delivering advanced and highly specialised healthcare services.

In addition to the hospital, the campus will include a medical college with provisions for 150 undergraduate and 100 postgraduate students annually, along with more than 40 super-specialists. Plans also encompass a College of Nursing and an allied healthcare institution. The development will facilitate residential facilities for healthcare staff and their families, forming a cohesive ecosystem around the hospital.

Research will play a crucial role within the Adani Arogya Mandir, targeting various fields such as genomics, precision medicine, and artificial intelligence. The institution intends to collaborate with international partners on projects and clinical pathways, focusing on translating scientific advancements into superior diagnosis and treatment methodologies.

Investment Roadmap and Community Initiatives

During the event, Gautam Adani unveiled a strategic investment roadmap exceeding Rs 1 lakh crore for West Bengal by 2035. This comprehensive investment plan encompasses multiple sectors, including ports, logistics, renewable energy, power generation, and hyperscale data centres. Adani likened West Bengal to the Group’s foundational site in Gujarat, which is pivotal for their large-scale projects.

Furthermore, the Adani Group committed to the revitalisation of Kumartuli Ghat and entered into two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the West Bengal government. These agreements focus on restoring the historic Writers’ Building and promoting Kolkata’s Durga Puja festival through the Adani Pujo Preview initiative.

This latter programme aims to support puja organisers, artists, artisans, and the extensive ecosystem linked to Bengal’s Durga Pujas. The initiatives announced by the Adani Group signify a major step towards enhancing the healthcare landscape in West Bengal while fostering economic growth in the region.
