Activists Flag Pakistan’s Alleged Attacks on Afghanistan Civilians at United Nations

The CSR Journal Magazine

Activists and community leaders expressed significant worry regarding reports of civilian bombardment in Afghanistan by Pakistan during the 61st Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council held in Geneva. They cautioned that such military actions could exacerbate instability and place additional stress on a region that is already precarious. The conference served as a platform for diverse voices, including Afghan political representatives, who emphasized the urgent need for shared humanitarian values.

Highlighting Cultural Ties and Humanitarian Concerns

Maryam Mehrzad, an Afghan political activist, articulated her concerns about the situation and voiced the sentiments of many ordinary citizens who deem these actions unacceptable. She pointed out the deep-rooted cultural and religious connections between Afghanistan and Pakistan, noting that during this spiritually significant time, when compassion and unity are paramount, such developments are especially disconcerting. Mehrzad stressed that Afghanistan is currently grappling with numerous challenges, and these reported attacks further complicate the dire circumstances.

Focus on Broader Human Rights Issues

Fazul ur Rehman Afridi, a noted Pashtun activist, raised alarms about the human rights situation in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He condemned the reported military actions by Pakistani security forces in Afghanistan that have apparently led to civilian casualties. According to Afridi, the conference attracted participants from various backgrounds, including Iranians, Kashmiris, Sindhis, and Baloch, focusing on crucial issues like girls’ education and the deteriorating state of law and order.

International Accountability Urged Amid Growing Concerns

Discussions at the session included allegations of military crackdowns against civilians in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and reports of assaults on hospitals in Afghanistan, which were described as violations of international legal standards. As concerns continue to escalate, attendees urged the international community to take these issues seriously, calling for accountability, restraint, and immediate actions aimed at safeguarding civilians and reinforcing human rights protections.
