AAP Leaders Launch Campaign Against Raghav Chadha Following Rajya Sabha Change

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has initiated a significant campaign against Raghav Chadha, a party member and Rajya Sabha MP, after he was reportedly replaced as deputy leader. Party officials shared multiple videos criticising Chadha, accusing him of failing to address pressing public issues. Until recently, he was actively participating in discussions in the Rajya Sabha, where he focused on matters concerning the common citizen. However, AAP’s decision to remove him has led to allegations that he was not representing the party’s interests effectively.

Chadha has responded to this upheaval by alleging that the move to replace him was intended to silence him. In a video statement, he questioned the logic behind the AAP leadership’s request to the Rajya Sabha Secretariat to curtail his speaking privileges under the party quota. He expressed confusion, stating, “Is it wrong to speak for the people?” He labelled this action as an attempt to stifle his voice and affirmed that he felt silenced, though not defeated.

Accusations Directed at Chadha

AAP members voiced their concerns openly, declaring a lack of support from Chadha in critical moments. Some party leaders pointed to incidents where he allegedly did not take a stand against Prime Minister Modi. Anurag Dhanda, AAP’s national media chief, commented on Chadha’s inactions, recalling occasions where he did not take part in key resolutions or when other MPs walked out in protest, remarking, “Did Sansad Sahab speak for hundreds of AAP workers who have been arrested?”

Further criticism came from Saurabh Bharadwaj, President of AAP’s Delhi unit, who remarked that those who exhibit fear are as good as defeated. Bharadwaj accused Chadha of focusing on superficial topics instead of addressing significant national matters, asserting that the time in Parliament should be utilised effectively to raise pressing issues with the government rather than trivial matters.

Atishi, another party member, joined the chorus denouncing Chadha, questioning his silence regarding the Election Commission and other relevant topics impacting citizens. She also challenged him on being absent during protests, asking if his absence was motivated by fear, especially given that he was out of the country during crucial moments.

Political Reactions and Future Implications for Chadha

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has expressed support for Raghav Chadha, praising his courage to speak out and criticising AAP’s leadership. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva noted that Chadha should have voiced his concerns much earlier and accused Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of capitalising on individuals before discarding them. BJP MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri echoed these sentiments, labelling actions to restrict Chadha’s voice as detrimental to democratic principles.

There is speculation regarding Chadha’s future amidst the ongoing tensions within AAP. Some observers have suggested that he might consider joining the BJP after facing backlash from his party, although Ashok Mittal, his successor in Rajya Sabha, dismissed these claims as mere rumours. Despite the challenges, Chadha seems determined to maintain his stance, signifying his unwillingness to be defeated.

Raghav Chadha, currently serving as a Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab, was elected by the Punjab Legislative Assembly in April 2022, with his tenure set to expire in April 2028. The evolving situation within AAP continues to draw attention, particularly regarding its implications for party dynamics and individual members’ futures.
