Bride, Groom, and Over 30 Guests Fall Ill After Consuming Food at Mumbai Wedding

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent wedding celebrations in Mumbai transformed into a distressing situation when the bride, groom, and over 30 guests reportedly fell ill after consuming food provided by the catering service. This incident occurred in the Bhandup area of Mumbai, prompting families to seek an investigation by the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The families are demanding accountability from the caterer involved in the event.

As the health of the guests deteriorated, relatives from both families quickly transported them to Agarwal Hospital, which is operated by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in Mulund. Medical professionals at the hospital confirmed that 27 individuals have been admitted for treatment, including 11 women, nine men, and seven children. The medical officer indicated that all patients received prompt medical care upon arrival.

Reportedly, many of the patients presented symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting upon admission, with some experiencing severe abdominal pain. The medical officer stated that the current condition of the patients is stable, and they are being closely monitored during their recovery.

Allegations Against Catering Service

The incident has left the families in shock, with several relatives alleging that the catering service provided substandard or stale food during the wedding. They have called for a comprehensive investigation by the FDA, led by Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, and are insisting on strict legal action against those deemed responsible for the incident.

One relative, the groom’s brother-in-law, described the sequence of events, stating that the initial signs of illness began with the women at the celebration. “They all started vomiting after eating their food. We want the FDA and Mumbai Police to investigate the matter and ensure justice for us,” he remarked. This sentiment reflects the distress and urgency felt by the affected families.

Another family member claimed that the onset of illness coincided with the serving of khowa, a dish made from reduced milk solids, towards the end of the celebrations. “The problem did not occur in the beginning. When the celebration was coming to an end, the caterer served khowa to the bride and groom and the other guests. After consuming it, they started falling sick,” the relative explained. This statement highlights the concerns regarding the timing of the food service and its potential link to the reported illnesses.

Demands for Accountability and Action

The families have expressed their frustration regarding the caterer’s service, particularly given that they paid Rs 1.5 lakh for the food provided at the event. They have called for the cancellation of the caterer’s licence if negligence is established through the investigation. The relatives are adamant that accountability must be enforced to prevent similar incidents in the future.

In light of this alarming situation, the families are urging the FDA to take immediate action to investigate the catering service and ensure that those responsible face appropriate consequences. The incident has raised significant concerns regarding food safety standards at public events, emphasising the need for stringent oversight in the catering industry.

As the investigation unfolds, the families remain hopeful for justice and a thorough examination of the circumstances that led to this unfortunate event. The health and safety of guests at such celebrations are paramount, and this incident serves as a critical reminder of the importance of food quality and safety in catering services.
