Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), managed by a GMR Aero-led consortium, has confirmed that operations on Runway 11R/29L, known as the third runway, will resume from September 20, 2026. This announcement follows the completion of a comprehensive rehabilitation programme, which has received all necessary regulatory approvals.

The rehabilitation project began in February 2026 and included extensive strengthening and upgrade work aimed at boosting operational safety, efficiency, and long-term capacity at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI Airport). The successful completion of these tasks has been validated by necessary inspections and regulatory checks.

Runway enhancements included resurfacing, permanent threshold displacement for runway 29L, and the construction of a new Rapid Exit Taxiway (RET Z1). Upgrades to airfield ground lighting systems and improvements to civil and electrical infrastructure were also part of this project, designed to optimise aircraft movement and reduce runway occupancy time.

Infrastructure and Safety Upgrades

The primary goal of these enhancements is to strengthen operational reliability during diverse weather conditions while improving overall runway efficiency. DIAL worked in close collaboration with various stakeholders, including the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Airports Authority of India (AAI), and Air Traffic Control (ATC), to ensure compliance with all relevant safety and regulatory requirements during the project.

According to DIAL, the completed upgrades are expected to significantly bolster the airport’s operational capabilities. The enhancements, combined with improved navigation and lighting systems, will effectively support the increasing demands of the aviation sector in India.

Following the successful execution of the prescribed procedures, the required approvals for resuming operations have now been officially granted, culminating in this milestone for the airport.
