India’s aspirations for a historic advancement to the Davis Cup Final 8 were revitalised by Dhakshineswar Suresh and N Sriram Balaji, although the effort ultimately fell short. Despite a strong performance in the doubles, India succumbed to a 1-3 defeat against South Korea in Seoul on Saturday after Sumit Nagal lost to Soonwoo Kwon. Entering Day 2, India was facing a challenging situation, having lost both opening singles matches.

Suresh and Balaji took to the court as a newly formed doubles duo, following a strategic change in the team where Niki Poonacha was replaced with Suresh. The two Indian players quickly established an aggressive rhythm, disrupting their Korean opponents Ji Sung Nam and Uisung Park with constant pressure on Nam’s serve. Their determination led to a crucial break when Balaji executed a volley winner, allowing India to secure the first set 6-3.

The Korean team responded dynamically in the second set, demonstrating improved service games and minimising their errors. The pivotal moment occurred when Balaji was broken after a series of misfortunes, enabling South Korea to equalise the match. As the contest progressed to a tense deciding set, India regained momentum, breaking Nam to love, and securing a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory, thus narrowing the overall score to 1-2.

Sumit Nagal’s Struggles in Reverse Singles

Following the double’s success, the onus was on Sumit Nagal to achieve a win in the reverse singles and keep India’s hopes alive. Unfortunately for India, Nagal faced Soonwoo Kwon and lost decisively with scores of 1-6, 2-6. Kwon, holding a higher world ranking of 157th compared to Nagal’s 247th, asserted control early and dictated play effectively.

Nagal, who had exhibited considerable determination in his prior match against Hyeon Chung, struggled to replicate that intensity against Kwon. From the outset, Nagal found himself on the back foot as Kwon maintained an aggressive baseline game. The Indian player attempted to elevate his performance in the second set but was consistently challenged by Kwon, who closed out the match without allowing Nagal a foothold.

This result marked South Korea’s progression to the knockout stage of the Davis Cup, making them the first Asian team to reach this phase since the alteration of the competition’s format. For India, this loss concluded a campaign that had initially shown great promise, particularly following their earlier win over the Netherlands.

Future for India’s Davis Cup Team

The defeat also casts uncertainty on the future leadership of the Indian team, as it possibly signals the end of Rohit Rajpal’s tenure as captain. His contract is set to expire in December 2026, and with no announcement regarding an extension as of yet, questions remain regarding the direction of the team moving forward.

India will now eye the Qualifier Round 1 scheduled for 2027, seeking opportunities to improve upon their performance in this tournament. The team, despite the recent setbacks, will look to bounce back and build on the experience gained from this year’s competition.
