The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030. India played a prominent role in the formulation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda 2030, and much of the country’s National Development Agenda is mirrored in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Achieving the SDGs requires governments, the private sector, civil society, and citizens alike to work together to ensure that we leave a better planet for our future generations.
In this regard, the NITI Aayog has started an SDG India Index by formulating a process by which SDGs will be measured in India. Since then, NITI Aayog has been organizing activities at a national as well as regional level to oversee the adoption as well as monitor the SDGs.
Since the election of Narendra Modi, the central government has put in a lot of energy in bringing about the development of North East India and help integrate the region with the entire country. Progress in the northeast region will play a massive role in India achieving the SDGs by 2030. The North-Eastern states already lead other parts of India when it comes to specific goals in SDGs such as zero hunger parameters.
NITI Aayog has organized Sustainable Development Goals Conclave 2020: Partnerships, Cooperation, and Development of North Eastern states in Guwahati, Assam, from 24th February 2020. This conclave will be attended by all Chief Ministers of North Eastern states, among others. The three-day event will see representations from the North-Eastern states, Central Ministries, academia, civil society, and international development organizations. Following the inaugural session, the technical sessions would include SDG localization in the North East, economic prosperity and sustainable livelihoods, climate adaptive agriculture, health, and nutrition, among others.
