Yuzvendra Chahal Announces Alcohol Quit Ahead of IPL 2026

The CSR Journal Magazine

In preparation for the IPL 2026 season, Yuzvendra Chahal has made a significant lifestyle change by opting to forgo alcohol consumption. The leg-spinner, set to represent the Punjab Kings, shared this decision during a podcast with AB de Villiers. Chahal had a commendable performance in his inaugural season with PBKS in 2025, where he took 16 wickets across 14 matches, helping his team reach the finals, only to lose to RCB.

Aiming for Success with Punjab Kings

Chahal expressed his ambition of breaking the title drought for Punjab Kings and emphasized his eagerness to excel in the upcoming tournament. He mentioned that his choice to quit drinking was partly influenced by a desire to serve as a role model for younger players within the franchise. “I’ve stopped drinking alcohol, and it’s been more than six months. I am now 35, so I want to be more active and give my 150% for my team. As a senior player, I want people in the IPL to learn something from me,” Chahal stated.

Health Focus Following Previous Injuries

The spinner further revealed that previous injuries led to a lackluster performance in IPL 2025, contributing to his decision to prioritize his health this season. Chahal reflected on his disappointment regarding his performance, explaining that rib and knuckle injuries hampered his ability to bowl effectively in the high-stakes matches. “I was a bit disappointed with myself. After the KKR game, I had a rib fracture, and later, my knuckle got fractured. So in the semifinal and final, I wasn’t able to bowl my proper leg-spin. This year, I want to take care of my body first,” he noted.

Striving for International Team Return

Chahal aims to utilize IPL 2026 as an opportunity to regain his place in the Indian national team. Having last participated in an international match for India in 2023, he has been absent from the national setup since then. With his commitment to improved fitness and performance, he hopes to attract selectors’ attention during the tournament.
