Chahal Becomes Highest-Paid Spinner in IPL History

Yuzvendra Chahal has become the highest-paid spinner in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) after Punjab Kings secured his services for Rs 18 crore during the IPL 2025 auction. This significant increase in salary marks a 177 per cent rise from his previous earnings of Rs 6.5 crore while playing for Rajasthan Royals until IPL 2024. Following this auction, Chahal was retained by Punjab Kings at the same price for the last IPL season, solidifying his status as a top player in the league.

Chahal’s Remarks on Salary Disparities

In a recent interview on ‘Baith & Bol with Aakash Chopra’, Chahal expressed his views on the reactions surrounding his substantial salary. He noted that there seems to be a problem when an Indian player earns a significant amount, whereas similar earnings for overseas players do not attract the same scrutiny. Chahal stated, “I never thought about it because I never played for money. Whether I get 5 crore or 25 crore, I will play the same way as I do.” His comments highlight the disparity in public perception regarding salaries based on nationality.

Chahal further elaborated on his career, mentioning that despite being the highest wicket-taker in IPL history, he has faced criticism for his earnings. He remarked, “Somebody gets 12 to 13 crore in his very first season, but I have played for 15 years and I am the highest wicket-taker. I deserve it. Even if I get 25 crore, that means I deserve it.” His statements reflect his belief in meritocracy within the sport, as he has consistently performed at a high level throughout his career.

Chahal’s perspective raises questions about the broader context of player salaries in cricket and the biases that may exist in public opinion. He concluded by stating, “Indian player ko mile toh problem hamko ho jaati hai, yaar isko kaise mil gaye,” which translates to a sentiment of disbelief when an Indian player receives a high salary, contrasting with the acceptance of similar amounts for foreign players.

Chahal’s IPL and International Career Achievements

Chahal holds the record for the most wickets in IPL history, with a total of 233 wickets in 188 matches from 2013 to 2026. His bowling average stands at 23.24, and he maintains an economy rate of 8.05. His best performance in the tournament is recorded as 5 wickets for 40 runs. Known for his skillful flight and ability to turn the ball, Chahal has achieved eight four-wicket hauls during his IPL career, showcasing his effectiveness as a bowler.

In addition to his IPL success, Chahal has represented India in 72 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 80 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), claiming 121 and 96 wickets, respectively. However, he has not featured in India’s playing XI for over three years, with his last appearance for the national team occurring in August 2023 during a T20I match against West Indies in Lauderhill.

Chahal’s journey in cricket reflects his dedication and resilience, as he continues to be a prominent figure in the IPL while navigating the complexities of player salaries and public perception. His achievements in both domestic and international cricket underscore his status as a leading spinner in the sport.
