World Elephant Day: Which qualities can we imbibe from these majestic creatures?

The CSR Journal Magazine

Elephants are sensible, gentle natured, deeply intelligent, and emotional animals. These majestic creatures exhibit complex social structures, demonstrate empathy and compassion, and possess remarkable cognitive abilities, including self-awareness. They are one of the largest land animals, with African elephants weighing up to 6 tons and Asian elephants up to 5 tons.

Elephants are known for their exceptional intelligence. They have large brains and exhibit complex problem-solving skills, memory, and social behaviour. They live in matriarchal herds, led by the oldest female, and display strong family ties and cooperation. They have impressive memory capabilities, allowing them to recall social relationships, habitats, and migration routes. Elephants have a complex communication and communicate through a wide range of sounds, body language, and touch.

Elephants show empathy towards each other and have shown self-awareness in multiple studies conducted on their behaviour. These characteristics make elephants one of the most fascinating and iconic species on the planet! By learning from these qualities, we can learn more empathetic, intelligent, and sustainable ways of living.

World Elephant Day is celebrated on August 12 every year to raise awareness about the welfare and conservation of elephants. The purpose is to draw attention to the threats faced by elephants across the world such as habitat loss, poaching, human-wildlife conflict, and mistreatment in captivity. The day is a reminder to encourage governments, organisations, and people to protect elephant habitats, prevent poaching, and promote humane treatment.
