“My Wife Turns Into Snake at Night and Bites Me”: UP Man’s Bizarre Complaint Shocks Officials

The CSR Journal Magazine

A bizarre incident that has left both officials and social media users stunned has come to light from Uttar Pradesh’s Sitapur district. A man claimed that his wife turns into a snake at night and attempts to bite him. The startling complaint was made during a public grievance event, Samadhan Diwas, in Mahmoodabad Tehsil, where residents usually raise issues like electricity and ration cards.

The complainant, Meraj, a resident of Lodhsa village, approached District Magistrate Abhishek with a written petition. He claimed that his wife Naseemun, a resident of Rajpur, transforms into a serpent at night and chases him around in an attempt to bite him. Meraj alleged that he narrowly escapes her every night and that he now lives in constant fear.

“She Tries to Kill Me in My Sleep”

Meraj insisted that his life is in danger and that he is mentally tormented by his wife’s behavior. “She tortures me mentally and could kill me in my sleep,” he said. He further alleged that his wife had already bitten him once, strengthening his belief that she undergoes a transformation at night.

He expressed frustration, blaming his in-laws for allegedly hiding her condition and misleading him into the marriage. “They knew everything and still got me married to her. My life is ruined,” he added.

Officials Order Inquiry, Social Media Reacts with Humor

District Magistrate Abhishek directed the Sub-Divisional Magistrate and local police to investigate the matter. The authorities are currently treating the case as a potential instance of mental harassment and have handed it over to the local Kotwali police for further action.

Meanwhile, the case has gone viral on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), with users drawing humorous parallels to Bollywood’s shape-shifting serpents, particularly referencing the 1986 film Nagina starring Sridevi. Comments ranged from jokes about a hidden naagmani to suggestions that Meraj should turn into a cobra himself.

Authorities Proceed with Caution

While many are taking the incident lightly, officials remain cautious. A police inquiry is underway to verify the facts, assess the mental health of both parties, and ensure the safety of the individuals involved. Whether this complaint stems from a genuine psychological issue or a domestic dispute remains to be seen.

India tops world in snakebite deaths

India is estimated to have around 58,000 snakebite deaths per year, accounting for about half of all snakebite fatalities globally. While official government reports historically showed a lower number of around 2,000 deaths annually, studies like the Million Death Study published in 2011 and subsequent research have revealed a far greater burden of snakebite cases and deaths.

The “big four” venomous snakes, the common krait, Indian cobra, Russell’s viper, and saw-scaled viper, are responsible for about 90% of these deaths. The actual number of snakebite deaths is often grossly underreported in official statistics.
