White House Valentine’s Day Post Sparks Online Firestorm Over Maduro, Greenland Themes

The CSR Journal Magazine

It is Valentine’s Day and obviously social media is flooded with romantic posts, but one post that has drawn everyone’s attention is the post by the White House. Instead of sharing usual romantic cards or wishes, the White House made a cryptic post that perfectly blends holiday cheer and the recent geopolitics happening. This post has sparked online debate, while some took this post seriously, some in humour.

What Valentine’s day post White House made?

The carousel images were captioned by the White House as ‘Made just for you’. One of the carousel images that is a matter of discussion is the one that features former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro blindfolded and handcuffed and captioned as ‘You captured my heart’. This message was a direct reference to the recent operation by the United States, when the former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro was captured and brought to New York.

In another card, there is a mention of the US-Greenland issue, in the card there is Greenland map and it is captioned, “It’s time we define our situationship.” The caption on relationship is a direct hint on the ongoing diplomatic issue that has been creating tension between the two countries.

Another visual has a combination of politics, partisan themes, this talked about immigration policy debates, which clearly hints on “executive order” that proclaims “Ur My Valentine”.

Social media users reaction on Trump’s post

Immediately after the post was live, social media was flooded with reactions, comments. While some comments and reactions were humorous, some were cryptic. Reactions on this post are divided. Some thought these cards are vocal and Trump has put his messages clear, straight and simple, while others thought it was humorous. Some called it bold, and creative. Some Trump supporters applauded his creativity, even applauded how the administration used satire to both wish and send the message.

There were many who thought the card had crossed all lines, called it inappropriate and questioned the government officials to use the wrong channel, especially when the card has images of real happening which is way more serious geopolitical manoeuvres. Some users called it ‘crass’ or ‘pathetic’.

While the comments were mixed, yet the unconventional holiday greeting caught everyone’s attention.
